Warriors’ patience leads to doubleheader split

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) led the Lycoming College softball team with a win and an RBI single, becoming the 11th player in school history to reach 100 career hits, as the team split a non-conference doubleheader against Penn College on Wednesday, April 13, by dropping the first game, 3-2, but winning the second game, 8-0, in six innings.

In the second game, Weaver (5-7) pitched a six-inning complete game shutout and surrendered just four hits to go with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Warriors got on the board first as senior Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) singled to left following a walk and a stolen base from sophomore Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley). After two straight walks to load the bases, Novak came in to score on a wild pitch. After sophomore Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) walked to reload the bases, junior Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) drew the fifth walk of the inning to score senior Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) from third.

The Warriors continued their scoring in the fifth inning as two of the first three hitters reached on a walk. With the bases again loaded, Secord drew her fourth walk of the game to score sophomore Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), who entered as a pinch runner for Crabb. The next batter was Thomas, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score freshman Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge, who entered as a pinch hitter and reached on an error. Fischer then lined a ball down the right field line to score sophomore Heather Secord (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) and Schoenstadt, as the Warriors took a 7-0 lead.

In the sixth, Crabb led off with her fourth walk of the game and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Crabb then advanced to third on another wild pitch which walked senior Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area). Schoenstadt then lined a ball down the right field line to score Crabb and invoke the eight-run mercy rule to end the game.

Stehman (2-2) took the loss, as she started and then re-entered the game in the seventh. Stehman gave up four runs on two hits and five walks.

The Warriors were led offensively by Schoenstadt, who finished the day with two hits, three runs, three stolen bases and four walks. Thomas scored twice on the day and walked three times while Secord, who did not play in the first game, finished the second game with no official at-bats as she was able to work a walk in all four plate appearances.

As a team, the Warriors walked 18 times in the second game and had five players total at least three walks between both games.

Kustanbauter (3-3) recorded the win for the Wildcats in the first game, as she pitched a complete game and gave up two runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

After the Wildcats (6-7) scored a run in the first inning on a hit and an error, the Warriors (12-15) responded in the bottom of the first, as Schoenstadt led off with a single and was quickly moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Novak and a stolen base. Two batters later, Weaver ripped a single up the middle to score Schoenstadt with her 100th career hit.

The Warriors struck again in the fourth when Thomas walked and stole second. Two batters later, senior Ashley Burger (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) singled to center to score Thomas to take a 2-1 lead. In the sixth, the Wildcats were able to scratch two runs across the plate on four hits, though, to take the lead. The Warriors rallied in the seventh, as Schoenstadt was able to get as far as third base, but Kustanbauter was able to get a fly ball to end the game.

Shady (6-7) pitched a complete game, giving up two earned runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Kelsey Gantz led the Wildcats with three hits while Tiana McCormick and Maddie Wenk both recorded two hits. The Wildcats finished the day with 13 total hits.

The Warriors return to action on Saturday, April 16, when they travel to Lebanon Valley for a tough MAC Commonwealth doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.?
