Warriors drop Penn State Abington in opener

ABINGTON, Pa. – Four Lycoming College women's lacrosse players finished with a hat trick and Lycoming opened Karen Shaddock's tenure as head coach by setting a program record for margin of victory in a 22-1 win at Penn State Abington on Wednesday, March 2, at Memorial Field.

Senior Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck/Anne Arundel C.C.) picked up right where she left off in 2015 when she led the MAC Commonwealth in goals and points, finishing with seven goals and two assists to lead the Warriors (1-0 overall). Sophomore Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) added three goals, three assists, eight draw controls and two groundballs, senior Kelsey Harshman (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert) added three goals and an assist and freshman Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) finished with three goals and four draw controls.

Both freshman Themina Peti (York, Pa./West York) and sophomore Jenna Hudson (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) each scored two goals and freshman Kim Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) led the defense with five groundballs. Junior Leanne Shaw (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) added a goal, an assist and three groundballs.

The team's 21-goal margin of victory surpassed the mark of 20 set twice (St. John Fisher, 23-3, 1998; Hood, 20-0, 2001). The 22 goals are tied for ninth-most in program history.

The Warriors started the scoring just nine seconds into the game, as Lazarich won the draw control and ran the length of the field to score. Five goals followed before Abington (0-2 overall) got its lone goal of the game from Molly Wyman with 13:44 left in the first half. The Warriors responded with seven more goals to take a 13-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Lycoming added nine more goals while allowing Abington to take just three shots.

In net, junior Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) (1-0) earned the win, making two saves and allowing one goal in the first half before yielding to freshman Megan Bozarth (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla), who stopped all three of the shots she faced in the second half.

Jill Varriano (0-2) made nine saves in net for the Lions. Bridget Meade led the team with three groundballs and Sarah Eisele and Wyman each had three draw controls.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, March 5, when they host Rutgers-Camden at 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex in another non-conference game.
