Weaver, Shady toss Warriors to another sweep at the beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) tossed a five-hitter in the first game and sophomore Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) notched a four-hitter in the nightcap, as the Lycoming College softball team wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a 5-1 win over Robert Morris University-Springfield and a 6-1 victory over Hunter College at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex on Friday, March 11.

The Warriors finished the trip down South with an 8-1 record, which is tied with the 1994 team for the best start for the program through nine games.

Weaver did it all for Lycoming in the first game, tossing a five-hit complete game and adding four hits and four RBI in a 5-1 win over Robert Morris University-Springfield (1-4 overall).

With the game tied at one in the third inning, the Warriors rallied for three runs to break the game open. Sophomore Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) led the inning off with an infield single before senior Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) drilled a hard-hit liner off the shortstop's glove and into left field. After Shady was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Weaver delivered a two-run single into right field. Junior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) drove in Shady with a sac fly.

In the fourth, Lycoming tacked on one more run, as senior Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and Schoenstadt each walked to lead off. After a foul out, Thomas was thrown out trying to steal. Schoenstadt beat the throw to third after a hard hit grounder to short by Shady to put the runners on the corners, where Weaver drove in Schoenstadt with a single to center field.

Lycoming got on the board in the first inning when Shady doubled into the right-center field gap before Weaver delivered a Texas Leaguer over the second base bag to drive her in.

The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the second, using a pair of errors, an infield single and a walk to scratch the run across.

After the second inning, though, Weaver allowed just three more base runners, on two hits and a hit batter, leaving two stranded in scoring position. She finished off the five-hitter with a walk and a strikeout, as she allowed no earned runs during the game.

Taylor Hastings took the loss for Robert Morris, as she allowed seven hits and five runs in four innings. She walked three and struck out one. Hastings also led the team offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

In the second game, Shady (4-0) tossed a four-hitter and Lycoming strung together a six-run fifth-inning to down Hunter (1-3 overall), 6-1.

Shady worked out of trouble in the first inning, as two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out, but she reared back to strike out the next two batters to end the threat.

Lycoming struggled to get runners on base, meanwhile, and Shady settled in to retire six of her next seven batters. In the bottom of the fourth, though, a lead off walk by Brianna Monaco set the stage for the Hawks to take the lead. She took second on a passed ball, moved to third on a one-out single by Nicole Fillisetti before scoring a two-out wild pitch.

Lycoming responded in a big way in the top of the fifth, stringing together six runs on six hits, an error and a hit batter.

Kunes led off by getting hit by a pitch before moving to second on a sac bunt by sophomore Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area). Thomas followed with an RBI single to right field before she moved to second on a single to left by junior Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg Area). After a pop out, Schoenstadt loaded the bases with a single into left field. Sophomore Heather Secord (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) delivered a two-run liner into right field and an errant throw cleared the bases, as Schoenstadt scored to make it 4-1.

Shady followed with another line shot single to score Secord and Weaver followed with a double into right center to score Shady to round out the inning's six runs.

With a five-run lead in hand, Shady retired the next six batters before Annalise Mcclellan led off the seventh with a single. However, Schoenstadt doubled her off from center field, throwing a dart after making a catch in right center to get the out, and Shady retired the last batter to end the game.

Shady allowed four hits, one run and four walks in the complete game. She struck out five as she improved to 4-0 with a 1.31 ERA on the season.

Erika Colangelo (1-1) took the loss, allowing six hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings. She struck out two. Fillisetti led the Hawks' offense, going 2-for-2.

The Warriors return to Pennsylvania to open the 30-game portion of its Northern schedule against King's College on March 17, with the doubleheader set to start at 3 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
