Warriors power past Monarchs in game two, split twinbill

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain), sophomore Heather Secord (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) and senior Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) combined for eight hits, seven runs and nine RBI to lift the Lycoming College softball team to its first win over King's College since 2005, 13-7, in the second game of the Thursday afternoon, March 17's doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. In the first game, Lycoming left the tying run at second base, falling just short in a 4-3 decision.

The win in the second game was Lycoming's first against King's in a string of 12 games, dating back to a 2-1 win on April 16, 2005.

After a late rally fell just short in the first game, the Warriors (9-2 overall) left no doubt in the second game, pounding 14 hits and scoring in five straight innings to close out the game.

Down 2-0, the Warriors got started in the bottom of the second, as senior Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) singled to the shortstop. She stole second and after a lineout, she moved to third on a single up the middle by Secord. Secord stole second to put runner at second and third for Thomas, who smashed a single into right to tie the game.

Lycoming took the lead in the third inning with a five-run, four hit frame. With one out, senior Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) reached on a grounder to short a play after a foul ball was dropped to extend her at bat. Sophomore Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) followed with a single through the left side and Weaver walked to load the bases. Kunes dropped in a single to right center to score two runs before Secord delivered the big blow with a homer to left field.

The Warriors added another run to take an 8-2 lead in the fourth, as senior Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) dropped a double to left field. She moved to third on a groundout and with two outs, she dropped on an error in the outfield.

King's (7-7 overall) strung together four hits in the top of the fifth inning to close within four runs, but Lycoming got three in response in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-4 lead. Secord started the rally with a one-out walk before Thomas singled through the right side. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Poorman pushed a single into left center to score two runs. Sophomore Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) followed with a single to right before a throwing error allowed Poorman to score.

King's did not go quietly, though, scoring three runs on six hits in the top of the sixth, getting the tying run to the plate, but Thomas turned in the play of the game when she caught a liner and doubled off a runner at first to end the rally.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kunes delivered a two-out homer to left before Secord hit a double off the top of the fence in left-center before Thomas drove her in with a single up the middle. The Monarchs loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Weaver got out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.

Kunes finished 2-for-4 with two runs, three RBI and a homer, Secord went 3-for-3 with four runs, a double, a homer and three RBI and Thomas wet 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI, as the 5-7 batters combined to go 8-for-11 with seven runs and nine RBI. Poorman also went 2-for-3 with a doubles, two runs and two RBI.

King's posted 18 hits in the game, with Samantha Bloom and Kelcie Senchak each notching three hits. Senchak also added two hits and two RBI.

Weaver (4-1) earned the win, allowing 18 hits and six earned runs, but she struck out seven and walked none. Bloom (2-3) took the loss, allowing eight hits and seven runs in 3 1/3 innings. She walked one and struck out three.

In the first game, Lycoming rallied in the seventh inning, but the tying run was left at second base, as King's was able to hold on for a 4-3 win.

Down 4-1 in the seventh inning, Lycoming rallied, as senior Ashley Burger (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) led the frame off with a walk. After a fielder's choice, Poorman moved to second on a wild pitch and Schoenstadt reached on a walk. A fly out followed, but Shady delivered a single to left to score Poorman and an error allowed Schoenstadt to score and bring the winning run to the plate, but a flyout ended the game.

Lycoming began its comeback in the fifth inning, as Schoenstadt reached on a liner that tipped off the left fielder's glove before scoring on a single to left by Novak.

King's took the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs, with Shelby Eby scoring two runs with a triple to right field. In the fifth, the Monarchs added two more runs, thanks to four walks and a hit batter.

Senchak led the Monarchs with two hits and Nicole Turner added two runs. Shady led the Warrior offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and Schoenstadt scored twice.

Rachel Linso (2-3) earned the win for the Monarchs, allowing five hits and one earned run in the complete game. She walked four. Shady (4-1) allowed seven hits, five walks and four earned runs while tying her season-high with seven strikeouts.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, March 19, when they head to Alvernia to open the MAC Commonwealth season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
