Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Warriors use second-half blitz to down Crusaders, 17-9

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) fell one point shy of the school's single-game record to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team, as it used a 10-goal performance in the second half to upend Susquehanna University, 17-9, in non-conference action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon, March 10.

Jackson finished with seven goals and four assists for 11 points, tying the season-high for points set by sophomore Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) against Hiram when she had six goals and five assists. The 11 points are tied for sixth-most in program history, as she helped Lycoming improve to 4-0 for the second straight year.

Lazarich, meanwhile, posted five goals and one assist and freshman Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) added three goals, as the Lycoming midfield overwhelmed Susquehanna en route to Lycoming's first win over Susquehanna (0-2 overall) since 2008.

The Warriors dominated possession throughout the game, winning 22 of the game's 28 draw controls, including nine of 12 in the second half. The team's defense forced 12 second-half turnovers, as well, and the controlled play forced Susquehanna into 18 second-half fouls and 39 in the game.

Down 8-7 at halftime, Lycoming exploded out of the gate, with Lazarich tying the game just 1:51 into the half after Jackson picked up a ground ball just outside the arc after a save by junior goalkeeper Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown).

After earning the next draw control, Jackson found the back of the net with 26:52 left to give Lycoming a 9-8 lead. McGinniss followed with a free-position goal with 23:23 on the clock and Jackson found Lazarich for another quick strike with 22:34 left. The run continued with two more goals from Jackson and one from senior Kelsey Harshman (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert) to give Lycoming a 14-8 lead with 17:38 left. Jackson added another assist to McGinniss with 9:13 left.

Susquehanna finally ended the run with 7:07 left on a score by Brooke Burnett, but Lazarich and Jackson added scores in the final five minutes to complete the blitz.

Susquehanna broke through with two goals in the game's first five minutes, but Lycoming got on the board with 25:08 left when Jackson drove in for an unassisted score. The score opened the floodgates, as Lazarich and Jackson each added another goal in the course of the following minute. The goals kept coming quickly, with Susquehanna tying the game at four with 20:29 left, but Lycoming followed with a  three-goal run that started on an around the net wrap around by junior Leanne Shaw (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford).

The Crusaders came back from the 7-4 deficit, though, scoring the final four goals of the first half to take an 8-7 lead into the break.

Shaw finished with a goal and two assists and Harshman posted a goal and an assist for Lycoming.

McGinniss grabbed 11 draw controls and added three ground balls and a caused turnover to lead Lycoming's possession-driven game. Lazarich added six draw controls and two ground balls and both freshman Thamina Peti (York, Pa./West York) and sophomore Jenna Hudson (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) each added two ground balls.

Kelcie Ehler led the Crusaders with three goals and an assist and Annie McElaney added two goals and two assists. Brooke Burnett also posted three goals and four caused turnovers and Becky McHugh grabbed five ground balls to lead the team.

Gerling (4-0) finished with five saves in net, grabbing a team-high three ground balls and also causing one turnover.  Alyssa Rothman (0-1) made four saves for Susquehanna in the game's final 37 minutes, allowing 10 goals.

The Warriors get back on the field on Sunday, March 13, when they head to Elmira for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
