OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior
David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) led the Lycoming College men's basketball team with a game-high 22 points and four assists, but Stevenson University used 20-point games from both Erik Fisher and Sean Mayberry to post a 73-68 MAC Commonwealth win on Monday night, Feb. 1, at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Â
Sophomore
Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) added 16 points and four rebounds and senior
John Monkam (Lanham, Md./DuVal), making his second career start, notched nine points, seven rebounds and two steals. Junior
Willie Kee (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) tied his career high with six points, while also adding four rebounds and two assists.
Â
The Warriors (15-5 overall, 7-4 MAC Commonwealth) shot 41 percent (28-of-69) from the field and took 14 more shots than the Mustangs (7-12 overall, 5-5 MAC Commonwealth), but Stevenson hit 18-of-24 at the line, six more free throws than Lycoming to make up the final difference.
Â
Down by nine points near the midpoint of the second half, the Warriors scored seven straight points to pull within two after a pair of free throws from Monkam made it 50-48 with 9:52 left. Stevenson got the lead back to six, but Lycoming kept it within two possessions for much of the rest of the way, but Stevenson found an answer on each of the four times the Warriors pulled within four points. Finally, a 3-pointer by Mayberry with 1:44 left gave Stevenson a 69-61 lead and the Warriors were unable to close back within two possessions until the final 21 seconds.
Â
The Warriors did force a pair of Mustang turnovers late, but couldn't get a field goal to fall to close within a possession in the final seconds.
Â
Heading into the break tied, the Warriors took an early lead in the second half, with Wallace hitting two shots to help the team take a three-point lead before the two teams began a period of alternating three leads and a tie. However, a pair of free throws from Christian Roberts with 16:01 left helped Stevenson start an 11-2 run that helped them take a 49-40 lead with 12:08 left.
Â
Through the first eight minutes of the game, the two teams played even, with sophomore
Roger Wilson (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) tying the game at 12. However, the Mustangs responded with seven straight points and a 12-4 run that was capped on a jumper by Erik Fisher to give them a 24-16 lead with 8:17 left.
Â
Down by eight, the Warriors started to chip into the lead when sophomore
Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) threw down a dunk, beginning a 12-4 run that finished off the half, as Wilson rounded out the half's scoring with an old-fashioned three-point play with 38 seconds left to head into the break tied at 28.
Â
Stevenson shot 46 percent (25-of-55) from the field, led by 20 points and eight rebounds from Fisher and 20 points and nine rebounds from Mayberry. Christian Roberts added 14 points and three assists and Ryan Hill notched six blocked shots.
Â
The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Feb. 3, when they host Messiah in another MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. The women tip at 6 p.m. before the men play at 8 p.m.
