Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

McFadden lifts Warriors past Monarchs

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – On a night where the Lycoming College women's basketball team shot just 32 percent from the field, freshman Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) led the team to a fourth-quarter comeback, finishing with a career-high 20 points, as Lycoming beat King's, 52-49, on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at McCrane Gymnasium.

Down by two points with 2:31 left, the Warriors (6-2 overall) took the lead when McFadden hit a 3-pointer from the left wing off the first assist of the season from senior Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional).  Over the next two minutes, the Monarchs (1-7 overall) had five chances to tie or take the lead, but it was freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) who put the next points on the board, hitting a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left after she grabbed an important defensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer.

The Monarchs got back within a point thanks to two free throws from Rebecca Prociak with 22 seconds left. The Warriors got the ball across midcourt before it was tipped out. On the inbounds, McFadden was fouled and she hit one of her two free throws to make it 51-49 with 12.9 seconds left. After the Warriors drew an offensive foul, King's was forced to foul McFadden again and with four seconds left, she hit one more free throw to make it 52-49.

King's was unable to get a shot off before the final horn, giving Lycoming its second win over King's this season (74-59 win on Nov. 19), marking the first time since 1995-96 that the Warriors beat the Monarchs twice in a season.

Lycoming led for 33 seconds in the game before the final 2:31, and both times by just one points, while King's led for 32 minutes and by as many as seven points at 15-8 late in the first quarter. The Warriors responded with an eight-point run, thanks to four from McFadden, taking a lead at 16-15 off a Kline jumper with 9:00 left in the second quarter.

The Monarchs got the lead back to six points late in the second quarter after a seven-point run before a McFadden layup with 43 seconds left sent the Warriors into halftime down by four points. In the third quarter, King's took one more six-point lead before a McFadden 3-pointer with 9:06 left brought the Monarchs lead back within three points and with just a 57 second exception, it stayed a one-possession game the rest of the way.

McFadden finished with 20 points, four rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal and junior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) finished with 12 points, a career-high 14 rebounds and two steals for her second straight double-double. Kline added nine points, eight rebounds and three steals and sophomore Jenn Grove (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) added two points, a career-high five steals and two assists.

Kayla Feairheller led the Monarchs with 15 points and four rebounds and Prociak posted 14 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Olivia Hoffman finished with four points, 11 rebounds and nine blocks and Kasey Seitz had three steals.

Lycoming shot just 32 percent (19-of-60) from the field and an uncharacteristic 39 percent at the free throw line (10-of-26). However, the Warriors were aided by 10 fastbreak points, thanks to 25 King's turnovers helping to overcome a King's squad that shot 36 percent (20-of-55) from the field.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Dec. 10, when they head to Widener University for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. The women tip at 1 p.m. before the men at 3 p.m.
