Warriors defend win streak, 65-47

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Holding SUNY Fredonia to 30 percent from the floor, the Lycoming College men's basketball team rode its winning streak to eight games with a 65-47 win over Fredonia in the opening round of the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 29, at Lamade Gym.
 
The Warriors (11-1 overall) shot just 38 percent (27-of-71), but a 23-8 run in the final eight minutes of the first half to take control of the game and they never let the Blue Devils (3-7 overall) within 14 points in the second half after heading into the break with a 43-27 lead.
 
After fighting through four ties and seven lead changes in the game's first 10 minutes before an old-fashioned 3-point play by senior Willie Kee (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) gave Lycoming a 16-15 lead with 10:13 left. Three minutes later, the Warriors began to push, with freshman Trent Bishop (Hyattsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) putting together an old-fashioned 3-point play.
 
As the clock ticked under five minutes, the Warriors got started again with eight straight points, extending the lead to 14 points at 36-22 with 2:39 left after a fastbreak bucket by senior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall). Lycoming extended the lead to 16 at the break after a tip-in at the buzzer by sophomore Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) made it 43-27. 
 
In the second half, the Warriors struggled offensively, shooting just 28 percent from the field, but held Fredonia to a lower 27 percent (7-of-26) and were even able to extend the lead to as many as 19 points after a fastbreak layup from senior Nyk King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science & Math)  made it 55-36 with 14:45 left.
 
Kee led the Warriors with 14 points and Newbold finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Wallace assed 10 points, five rebounds and four steals and senior David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) added nine points and five rebounds. Sophomore Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) added nine points as well. Freshman Damani Myers (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary's) posted six assists.
 
Richard De La Cruz led the Blue Devils with 10 points and Kareem Brown posted seven points and eight rebounds. Dante Williams also added six points, eight rebounds and three assists.
 
The Warriors scored 46 points in the paint and held a 22-7 advantage in points off turnovers and 22-4 in second-chance points.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Friday, Dec. 30, when they face Delaware Valley (5-5 overall), 75-70 winners over Rosemont in the other first round game, in the Basinger Tournament finale at 3 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
