Warriors pull away from River Hawks, 66-53

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A strong second half in which the Lycoming College women's basketball team held Susquehanna University to 22 points helped it to a 66-53 non-conference win to knock its second straight opponent from the ranks of the undefeated on Sunday, Nov. 27, at Lamade Gym.
  Leading by one point heading into the second half, the Warriors (4-1 overall) ran away from the River Hawks (3-1 overall) in the second half, shooting 38 percent (12-of-31) in the half while holding the River Hawks to 28 percent (7-of-25).
 
The Warriors took over the glass in the second half, scoring 11 second-chance points thanks to seven offensive rebounds, helping the team hold a 41-33 advantage on the glass in the game.
 
With the score 32-31, the Warriors started the third quarter on a 10-2 run, with back-to-back buckets from junior Jenn Grove (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) giving Lycoming a 42-33 lead with 5:39 left in the quarter. The River Hawks responded with six straight points, but a jumper from freshman Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) led to a 9-3 run than helped Lycoming take a 51-42 lead into the final quarter.
 
The River Hawks cut the lead to six points with 6:04 left in the fourth quarter, but Lycoming responded with seven straight points, two buckets from sophomore Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and a 3-pointer from junior Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) that made it 59-46 with 4:51 left.
 
The River Hawks cut the lead to single digits just one more time with 3:03 left before Sipple put the game away with five straight points to extend Lycoming's lead to a game-high 14 points at 64-50 with 1:08 left.
 
The teams opened the game with four ties and two lead changes in the first quarter, but a jumper by freshman Hailey Dayton (Reisterstown, Md./St. Timothy's) at the buzzer helped Lycoming take a 14-12 lead, a lead it held for the last 30 minutes. Lycoming started the second quarter with an 8-3 run to take a 22-15 lead with 7:59 left. The Warriors held that a two-possession margin for much of the rest of the quarter, with a 3-pointer that hung on the rim before falling through from McFadden giving Lycoming a 28-20 lead with 3:50 left.
 
The River Hawks responded from there, going on an 11-4 run to close the half, with a fastbreak layup from Bailey Trell making it 32-31 at the break.
 
Sipple led the Warriors with 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals and Grove added 12 points and six rebounds, as she crossed 200 points in her career. Junior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) added 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a block and McFadden added 10 points, six rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal.
 
Freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) added seven points and Painter posted six points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.
 
Angie Schedler and Janine Conway each led the River Hawks with 11 points. Nicole Gault added six points, eight rebounds and two blocks and Nikki Komara added six points and three steals.
 
The Warriors head to Messiah to open its MAC Commonwealth season on Wednesday night, Nov. 30, with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
