Hot-shooting Warriors run past Nittany Lions, 85-67

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Shooting better than 50 percent for the third time this season, the Lycoming College men's basketball team scored 56 points in the paint and 34 off turnover to post a solid 85-67 win over Penn State Altoona on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 27, at Lamade Gym.

The Warriors (4-1 overall) shot 59 percent (34-of-58) from the field, including 64 percent (16-of-25) in the second half to run away with the game, leading by as many as 22 late in the second period. Junior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall College) led the team with 19 points, a career-high tying four steals, three rebounds and a block, as he was one of three members of the team in double figures.

Lycoming held a 56-24 advantage in points in the paint and 34-12 in points off turnover, as it forced 22 turnovers.

After a delay to the start of the game to an officiating conflict, the Nittany Lions (1-3 overall) stayed with the Warriors for much of the first 10 minutes of the game, working through four ties and 14 lead changes, which left the score tied at 25 with 9:32 left in the period.

A free throw by Wallace was followed by three straight Warrior layups and Lycoming added a 9-0 run late in the period to take a 45-34 lead with 1:22 left after a Wallace jumper, helping the team take a 46-36 lead into halftime.

The Warriors continued to roll in the second period, starting the half with a 10-5 run to take a 56-39 lead after a layup by Wallace. Penn State Altoona didn't go away, though, using its own 13-3 run to cut the lead to seven with 10:20 left, but a step back 3-pointer from senior Willie Kee (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) put the lead back in double figures. The Lions cut the lead to nine points twice more, but a layup by freshman Damani Myers (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary's) with 7:09 left started a 19-6 run that left the Warriors ahead 85-63 with 2:23 left. The Lions scored the final four points of the game to make up the final margin.

Senior Nyk King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science & Math) finished with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals and senior David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) added 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block. Freshman Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) added eight points, four rebounds and three assists and both sophomore T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) and freshman Trent Bishop (Hyattsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) each added six points.

Javon Wilson led the Nittany Lions with 21 points and five rebounds and Jordan Smith had 12 points and nine rebounds. Marquis White posted 10 points, seven assists and four steals. The Lions held a 39-31 advantage on the glass and even held a 21-20 advantage on fastbreak points.
