WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Despite firing 23 shots and forcing eight corner kicks, the Lycoming College men's soccer team could not find the back of the net, falling 1-0 to Alvernia University in a MAC Commonwealth matchup at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Saturday, Oct. 8.
The Crusaders (2-9 overall, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) ended the Warriors' 15-game MAC Commonwealth lossless streak, as Lycoming had been 13-0-2 dating back to a 3-0 loss at Messiah on Oct. 8, 2014.
The Warriors (6-4-3 overall, 1-1-1 MAC Commonwealth) had several quality chances in the game thanks to 19 Alvernia fouls, with sophomore
Jake Webb (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) hitting the post with a shot off a free kick in the 49
th minute after the team took 11 shots in the first half. Lycoming continued to pressure, even as the team was forced to play a man-down for the final 27 minutes. During that time, the Warriors still took five shots while Alvernia took only two.
Alvernia scored its lone goal in the 38
th minute, as Kevin MacFarland threw a long throw-in into the box and Chris Guth headed it into the left corner. It was one of only five shots in the game for the Crusaders.
Senior
Josh Gildea (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) finished with four saves for the Warriors and Zach Rider stopped nine shots to earn the shutout for the Crusaders.
The Warriors get back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 11, when they head to 21
st-ranked Messiah College for a 7 p.m. MAC Commonwealth match.
