Warriors split on opening day of Tip-Off Tournament

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Three Lycoming College volleyball players finished with double-digit kills, led by 12 a piece from seniors Kristine Jahn (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) to lead the team to a 3-1 win over Penn State Altoona, as it split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Tip-Off Tournament at Lamade Gym on Friday night, Oct. 7. The Warriors fell, 3-0, in the opening match to Susquehanna.

The Warriors were able to outlast the Nittany Lions (7-11 overall) thanks to the performances of Jahn and Fink as well as senior Tayler Whitman (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff), who added 10 kills and five digs in the 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15 win.

Fink finished with a double-double for the fifth time this year, adding 18 digs, two aces and two blocks and Jahn also added a block. Sophomore Cheyenne Altland (East Berlin, Pa./Delone Catholic) added eight kills and five digs. Junior Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) added 32 assists and seven digs and sophomore Emily Hepner (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) added 22 digs. Freshman Alyssa McDevitt (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) added five kills and five blocks.

The Warriors (12-11 overall) used a run of five points off the serve of freshman Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) in the first set to take a 12-7 lead and they never let the Lions back within two points and closed the set with a 25-19 advantage.
After the Lions won the second set, the Warriors took control of the third set after falling behind 13-12 thanks to an ace by Altland and a kill from Whitman, which ignited a 8-2 run, as Lycoming held on for a 25-20 win. In the fourth set, the Warriors broke a 5-5 tie with a 15-5 run en route to a 25-15 win.

Lycoming couldn't overcome a hot-hitting Susquehanna in the first match, falling 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-15) to a River Hawks squad that has received votes in the AVCA Division III poll throughout the season.

The Warriors started hot, taking a 5-1 lead in the first set and keeping the River Hawks within a point before  Susquehanna used a 4-0 run to take a 21-17 lead. The Warriors rebounded off the serve of Fink, who served up five straight points to take a 24-22 lead after a kill by freshman Katie Hausknecht (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus). However, the River Hawks had five kills in the next six points to take the set, 27-25.

In the second set, the Warriors took an 8-2 lead before the River Hawks fought back to tie it at 11. The River Hawks then took control late with a 7-3 run to close the set at 25-20. In the third set, the River Hawks used five straight points to take a 13-7 lead and break the set open en route to the 25-14 win.

Jahn led the Warriors with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage and Whitman added seven kills and seven digs. Burger added 17 assists and four digs and Altland added five kills, six digs, an ace and a block. Hepner added a match-high 13 digs.
