Henderson’s career day powers Warriors past Hood

FREDERICK, Md. – Senior Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) led the Lycoming College women's basketball team by scoring a career-high 25 points as the team used a strong second-half to cruise to an 80-61 MAC Commonwealth victory over Hood College on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 9, at BB&T Arena.

The win raises the Warriors overall record to 9-5 with a 4-2 MAC Commonwealth record, while the loss drops the Blazers to a 4-11 overall record and 0-6 record in conference.

The Warriors started off strong when junior Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) found sophomore Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) inside the paint for a layup just 15 seconds into the game. This started a 7-0 run for the Warriors and was part of a 9-2 run in which the Warriors hit each of their first four shots. Both teams went back and forth in the first quarter but the Warriors held a 23-21 lead at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Warriors got hot once again as they went on a 9-0 run which was fueled by seven points from Henderson. Sophomore Hailey Fricke (Denver, Pa./Garden Spot) got in on the action in the second and hit a jumper with 3:28 remaining to give the Warriors a 10-point lead. The Warriors led by as many as 12 in the second quarter, but Hood got back in the game in the final two minutes as they scored nine straight to close the half to close the margin to 40-37 lead at the half.

The Warriors shot 16-for-32 (.500) in the first half and committed three fewer turnovers (12-9) than Hood. Henderson had a huge first half, as she finished with 15 points while shooting 7-for-8 (.875) to go along with four rebounds.

With 8:18 remaining in the third, Calella found freshman Jenn Grove (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) for a three-pointer, making Calella the fourth player in Warrior history to record 75 or more assists in a season three times in a career. In the fourth, Calella assisted Shelby Schoonover (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) on another three to make her the sixth player in Warrior history with 250 career assists.

The Warriors went on a 14-2 run in the fourth quarter which pushed the lead to 66-49 and effectively put the game away. Hood tried to come back with six straight points of its own, but the Warriors were just too strong down the stretch.

Manges finished the game with 12 points and shot 3-for-5 (.600) from deep and contributed four rebounds and two assists and Calella finished with six points, three rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Schoonover provided a big spark off the bench, as she finished with 12 points including 2-for-4 from deep, with three rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

As a team, the Warriors shot 28-for-64 (.438), including 5-for-9 (.556) on 3-pointers and hit 19-of-24 free throw attempts (.792). The Warriors bench outscored Hood's, 29-9, and the Warriors also cashed in with 37 points off turnovers.

Hood got big games out of Verkia Smith and Taylor McGaughey. Smith finished with a team-high 19 points, four rebounds, and four steals while McGaughey finished with 13 points, two rebounds, three steals, and a block.

The Warriors will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 13 when they travel to 14th-ranked Albright for a 6 p.m. MAC Commonwealth matchup.
