Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors run past Penn State Altoona, 71-54

ALTOONA, Pa. – Sophomore Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) posted his first career double-double and junior Nykolas King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) led the Lycoming College men's basketball team with 16 points in a solid 71-54 win over Penn State Altoona in Lycoming's final non-conference game on Wednesday night, Jan. 20, at Adler Gymnasium.

The loss drops the Lions to 3-10 overall on the season while the Warriors have surged to 14-3 and have extended their winning streak to five games, their longest of the season. The win clinched Lycoming's seventh winning season in eight years under head coach Guy Rancourt and the team's 20th in the past 21 years.

Newbold finished with 14 points on 7-for-12 shooting (.583) and came away with a career-high tying 10 rebounds. King had an efficient 16 points, five rebounds and two steals and senior Eric Ishman (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) added eight points and a season-high five steals to lead the team in an emergency start. Sophomore Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) finished with seven points and six rebounds.

As a team, the Warriors held the advantage in rebounding (45-40) while dominating in points in the paint (46-22), fastbreak points (16-10), and points off turnovers (26-8). The Warriors forced 24 Lion turnovers and limited damage from the free throw line as the Lions were only able to get seven free throw chances.

The Warriors attacked the rim right away as Ishman banked in a layup just five seconds into the game. After both teams battled, the Warriors went on an 8-2 run to take a 13-6 lead but the Lions quickly answered with eight straight points to take a 14-13 lead. The Warriors responded again with 12 straight points in a 16-3 run to take a 29-17 lead, which included a beautiful no-look, behind-the-back pass from senior Armani Taylor (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bowie) to a cutting Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) for the layup.

Leading 33-25, Ishman threw a lob from beyond the 3-point arc to a soaring Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) who was able to finish the alley-oop layup to help the Warriors regain a 10-point lead. The Warriors maintained the double-digit lead for much of the rest of the half before the Lions went on an 8-2 run to cut into the Warrior lead, 42-37. Freshman Johan Hammarstedt (Taby, Sweden/Danderyds Gymnasium) hit a huge 3-pointer to give the Warriors some room to breathe, helping give the Warriors a 48-38 lead going into the half.

The Warriors began the second half by scoring the first 12 points, including an old-fashioned three-point play from King and a 3-pointer by Ishman on the next possession. The run gave the Warriors a 60-38 lead, their largest lead of the game. The Lions responded by scoring the next 10 points to cut the lead to 12 points, but the Warriors closed the game on a 9-4 run to put the Lions away.

Junior David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) notched six points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals and junior Willie Kee (Baltimore, Md./Parkland) added season-highs of six points, five rebounds and four assists.

Juniors Jordan Smith and Quinn Luhr both finished with 12 points for the Lions with Smith grabbing nine rebounds and Luhr grabbing four.

The Warriors will return to conference play on Saturday, Jan. 23, when they travel to Stevenson for a 1 p.m. matchup.
