WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After finding the crossbar twice already, the Lycoming College women's soccer team finally found the back of the net in the 83
rd minute when sophomore
Hannah Rinaldo (Minersville, Pa./Minersville) scored to help Lycoming College retain the Battle for the Lumber with a 1-0 win over Penn College on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 30, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Lycoming (7-3 overall) retained the Lumber for the first time since 2011, as they also won the matchup with Penn College in 2014, 4-2. Lycoming has won four of the six meetings in the trophy game's history.
With just under nine minutes left, Penn College (4-5-2 overall) ripped off a pair of shots after a corner kick, but both were blocked away and on the ensuing goal kick, the Warriors quickly moved down the field. After a throw-in near the goal box, Penn College deflected a ball out, but senior
Bree Nishibun (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) was delivered the ball in space and she found senior
Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck/Anne Arundel C.C.) on the right side of the goalbox. Jackson dribbled once and crossed the ball to the center of the net, where Rinaldo went to the right corner, where it crossed the goalline before it was deflected high into the netting.
Lycoming held a 20-7 advantage in shots and controlled much of the play in the game, but couldn't find the back of the net. Jackson nudged a shot off the crossbar in the 15
th minute before both sophomore
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and Jackson made Penn College keeper Colleen Bowes make point blank diving stops in the middle of the period.
Rinaldo got inside on a breakaway early in the second half, but her shot hit the crossbar. Penn College nearly took the lead in the 55
th minute, as Hailee Hartman went down the right sideline and hit the crossbar with a shot from 15 yards out.
After the goal, the Warriors controlled much of the closing minutes, with junior
Madison Walmer (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) lifting a high shot off the crossbar and another by senior
Katie Cox (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill/Anne Arundel C.C.) went high from 25 yards out.
Freshman
Helen Ross (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) stopped one shot in the first half before sophomore
Joelle Winey (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) stopped two shots to earn the win in the second half. Bowes made seven saves for the Wildcats.
Jackson has now posted a point in nine straight games, as she has posted 12 goals and three assists during that span. Her 27 points on the season are tied for seventh in the school's single-season record book.
The Warriors open MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they host Albright College at 12 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
