WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A first-half goal by the Albright College was enough to stand up on a rainy Saturday afternoon, Oct. 3, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, as it posted a 1-0 win over the Lycoming College women's soccer team in both teams' MAC Commonwealth opener.
In the first half, both teams struggled on the wet field, but Lycoming (7-4 overall, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) had a couple solid opportunities to find the back of the net, with their best chance coming in the 19
th minute, as sophomore
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) found a step on a defender and fired a shot to the left side of the net that was knocked away by the keeper. Sophomore
Hannah Rinaldo (Minersville, Pa./Minersville) swooped in, but her shot flew over the crossbar.
Albright (5-4-2 overall, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board in the 40
th minute, as Morgan Valera found the ball at the top of the goalbox and then fired it high into the right corner after a header by Erica Bross found Valera on the left side of the box.
In the second half, the Warriors took four shots, driving on the goal and maintaining possession for much of the first 15 minutes, but Albright was able to regain control in the middle of the half, as they took nine shots. Neither team could post a real quality chance, though.
Lycoming's freshman goalkeeper
Helen Ross (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) made five saves and Albright's Payton Bogatch stopped two in the shutout win.
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when they head to Stevenson University for a 7 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
