Warriors open Tip-Off Tournament with two wins

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With two of its best performances of the season, the Lycoming College volleyball team opened the 18th annual Tip-Off Tournament with a  pair of wins, downing CCNY, 3-0, before posting a 3-1 win over undefeated Alfred State in the nightcap at Lamade Gym on Friday, Sept. 25.
 
In the opening match of the tournament, the Warriors wasted little time in handling CCNY, sweeping the Beavers, 25-9, 25-8, 25-7.
 
The Warriors hit an astounding .557 (45-6-70) in the match, and used an impressive 88 percent (22-of-25) sideout percentage in the win.
 
Junior Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) posted 11 kills, hitting .348, and junior Tayler Whitman (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) added 10 kills and an impressive .769 hitting percentage. Junior Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) added six kills and five digs and freshman Cheyenne Altland (East Berlin, Pa./DeLone Catholic) also posted six kills and two blocks.
 
Senior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) registered five kills in six attempts and added eight aces, the fifth-most in school history. Freshman Emily Hepner (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) added 10 digs, as Lycoming scooped up 36 of CCNY's 55 attempts in the match. Junior Hannah Vile (Sheffield, Pa./Sheffield Area) posted 25 assists and six digs in two sets of action.
 
Aida Cekic led CCNY (3-13 overall) with four kills and Veralucia Quispe finished with 10 digs.
 
Against Alfred State, the Warriors lost a tight first set, but rebounded to post 45 kills in the final three sets to walk away with a 23-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-10 win.
 
Slawson again paced the Warriors, using 17 kills, nine digs and a .314 hitting percentage to lead the team, while Richardson added 11 kills, five digs, three aces and two blocks and junior Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added 10 kills and five digs.
 
Burger posted 48 assists and nine digs and Fink posted her fourth double-double in five matches with 10 kills and 16 digs. Hepner led the squad with 19 digs, as Lycoming posted 75 digs against the Pioneers, who had 60 in the match.
 
Bryanna Godfrey led the Pioneers (13-1 overall) with 12 kills and 10 digs and Jess Padley posted 11 kills. Lera Braun notched 34 assists and 15 digs and Madison Webster posted 13 digs. Madison Szpaicher posted 12 digs and three blocks.
 
After falling in the first set after holding a 23-21 lead, the Warriors outlasted the Pioneers in the second set, which featured 16 ties and eight lead changes, as Lycoming rallied from down 24-22, with Slawson pounding down two kills and Richardson adding one during a four-point run that gave it the set. Lycoming never trailed again, jumping out on a 6-1 run in the third set and an 11-1 run in the fourth.
 
The Warriors wrap up the Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 26, when they face Wilkes at 10 a.m. and Misericordia at 2 p.m.
