WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and senior
Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck/Anne Arundel C.C.) each scored for the Lycoming College women's soccer team, which held off a late rally from King's College to post a 2-1 non-conference win on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 22 at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Â
The Warriors scored in each half to win for the third straight time and sixth time in the last seven games, improving to 6-2 overall for the first time since 2010.
Â
King's (3-2 overall) got on the board in the 78
th minute, as Mallory Fox took a cross from Alexandra Garrett and found the center of the net. The Monarchs, who outshot the Warriors, 17-11, pressured, getting one final chance after a foul just outside the box with 1:02 left. After the ensuing free kick was blocked back out, Garrett fired a shot just over the crossbar from 25 yards out.
Â
Lycoming got their offense started early in the game with a quick strike in the sixth minute, as sophomore
Hannah Rinaldo (Minersville, Pa./Minersville) found sophomore
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) with a through pass near the middle of the field. Lazarich sped around the last defender and then dropped a shot into the center of the net in front of the goalkeeper as she was coming out of the net.
Â
King's was able to control much of the rest of the first half, taking nine shots, but Lycoming also was able to take four shots and get a couple decent offensive chances on through passes. Freshman
Helen Ross (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) saved four shots in the half, including a left-handed stop on a header by Alexandra Garrett that kept the Warriors in the lead heading into the second half.
Â
In the second half, the Warriors began to pace play a bit more and that paid off in the 64
th minute when Jackson was pulled down on the left side of the box. She calmly stepped to the penalty kick line and fired it into the left corner to extend her school record to a goal in six straight games.
Â
Ross (6-2) finished with eight saves in an outstanding effort for the keeper, while King's Jessica Natale (3-2) finished with three stops.
Â
Lazarich's goal was the 22
nd of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth in school history with Carolyn Tascione (1997-00). She has 48 career points, which is sixth in school history, as she surpassed Beth Weixel (2001-04) in the game. Jackson's league-leading 11 goals are tied for sixth in school history with Rebekah Shipe (2007) and just four shy of the school record of 15 held by Danielle Curry (2004). She also has 24 points on the season, which is good for 10
th in program history.
Â
The Warriors get back in action Saturday, Sept. 26, when they head to FDU-Florham for another non-conference game against a MAC Freedom foe. The game is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
