Warriors split pair at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Junior Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) had a pair of double-doubles to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team on Saturday, Sept. 19, as it played a pair of matches at Allegheny College, falling to the host Gators, 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 7-25, 25-21) before downing Marymount (Va.) in the second match, 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-21).
 
Lycoming (8-4 overall) was led by 12 kills, 10 digs and two aces from Fink in the match with Marymount, as Lycoming was able to defeat the Saints (10-4 overall) for the first time since 2000, breaking a nine-match skid.
 
Both juniors Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) and Kristine Jahn (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) each added seven kills and senior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) posted six aces, five kills and a block.
 
The team was outstanding defensively, notching 74 digs while forcing Marymount into 28 attack errors. Freshman Emily Hepner (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) led the way with 29 digs and freshman Kyra Beltrandi (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) added eight. Sophomore setter Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) added 30 assists and 1 digs.
 
Emileigh Rettig led the Saints with 10 kills and seven digs and both Morgan McAlpin and Caroline Hanson added nine kills. Christine Tieman posted 22 assists and six digs and Cailyn Thomas notched seven kills and five blocks.
 
Against Allegheny (8-4 overall), the Warriors were hindered by 27 attack errors, as the Gators notched a 3-1 win to avenge a 3-1 Lycoming win in the Lycoming Invitational on Sept. 12.
 
Fink led the Warriors with 17 kills, 21 digs and two aces and Burger also added a double-double with 44 assists and 11 digs. Richardson added 12 kills, four digs and a block. Hepner also posted 27 digs and Beltrandi posted 13.
 
Taylor Samuel led the Gators with 17 kills and 13 digs and Julia Weeks posted six kills and seven digs. Terra Schall added 20 digs and Sarah Swartz posted four blocks. Justine Kelly posted 35 assists, nine digs and five aces.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when they host Widener in a 7 p.m. MAC Commonwealth match.
