Warriors fall to 18th-ranked Falcons

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshmen Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and Colleen McCormick (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) each scored two goals to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team, but a 10-goal first half by No. 18 Messiah College helped it to an 18-7 Commonwealth Conference win on Wednesday, April 8, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
 
The Warriors (7-3 overall, 0-3 Commonwealth) scooped up 25 ground balls in the game, the same amount as the Falcons (7-4 overall, 3-0 Commonwealth), but Messiah forced Lycoming into 23 turnovers and controlled 20 of 25 draws to lead to nearly 20 more possessions in the game.
 
Senior Casey Maguire (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) added two assists in the game, moving into third in school history with 58 career assists, one ahead of Justine Titko (2007-10).
 
Lycoming got on the board first when junior Savannah Fox (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) scored on a free-position shot just 39 seconds into the game, but Messiah responded with eight straight goals in the next 14 minutes to take control. Lazarich added a free-position goal with 15:22 left to end the run, but Messiah finished the half with two goals to take a 10-2 lead into the break.
 
After a goal to open the second half by the Falcons, senior Erin Cieniewicz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) scored on a nice move inside, but Messiah scored the next four goals to take a 15-3 lead. Junior Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Boradneck/Anne Arundel C.C.) followed with a goal off a transition ground ball for the Warriors. After Messiah scored three more goals, the Warriors closed the game with three goals in the last two minutes, with Lazarich scoring once before McCormick scored twice in transition in the game's final 20 seconds.
 
Lazarich led the team with two goals, a caused turnover and three ground balls and McCormick added two goals and a caused turnover. Jackson finished with a goal, an assist, two caused turnovers and six ground balls.
 
Clair Strikeleather led the Falcons with four goals and an assist and Stephanie Athens scored three goals. Carly Bajus and Marybeth Bindel each had two goals and an assist. Jenna Stover added a goal, two assists, six draw controls and two caused turnovers.
 
Sophomore Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) (7-3) stopped 12 shots in net for the Warriors and also picked up five ground balls. Alexa Dipeso stopped six shots in the win for the Falcons.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, April 11, when they head to Widener University for a critical Commonwealth Conference matchup at 1 p.m.
