Jackson’s goal helps Warriors edge Lions, 14-13

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck/Anne Arundel C.C.) scored her seventh goal on a free-position shot, firing low into the right corner, with 1:35 left to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team to a 14-13 Commonwealth Conference win over Albright College on a beautiful Senior Day Saturday, April 18, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

The win assures the Warriors their first winning season since 2010, improving to 9-4 overall and 2-4 in the Commonwealth Conference.

Albright (8-6 overall, 2-4 Commonwealth) patiently waited to set up its offense after tying the game at 13 and winning the draw. With 3:11 left, Meghan Wilson took a shot high that was stuffed by sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) and junior Katie Cox (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) got to the ground ball.

The Warriors moved quickly in transition and after setting up their offense, Jackson drew the foul in the shooting area to get the free-position shot, which she converted. Lycoming's senior Erin Cieniewicz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) won the draw control and Lycoming never let Albright get the ball back into its offensive zone.

Down 9-5 at halftime, the Warriors rallied back in the first six minutes of the second half, scoring five straight goals. Senior Casey Maguire (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) found freshman Jenna Hudson (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) for the go-ahead goal with 24:10 left.

Both teams alternated goals after that until a Wilson score with 14:17 left gave Albright a 12-11 lead. Jackson answered though, scoring unassisted with 8:17 left before taking a pass from Maguire just 30 seconds later to give Lycoming a 13-12 lead. Albright tied the game at 13 with 5:39 left when Corinne Donohue scored a free-position goal, setting up the dramatic end.

The Lions jumped out to a 3-1 lead before the Warriors scored three straight to take a 4-3 lead on a goal from Jackson with 21:28 left. The teams continued to play close, with Lycoming tying the game at five off a goal from Jackson with 17:03 left. However, the Lions scored the last four goals of the half to take a 9-5 lead at the break.

Jackson finished with seven goals, two assists, three draw controls and one caused turnover and Maguire added a goal and four assists to lead the Warriors. Both freshman Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and junior Savannah Fox (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) each added two goals and Cieniewicz notched a goal, an assist and three ground balls.

Senior Liz Francescone (Cream Ridge, N.J./Notre Dame) posted two ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead the defense.

Jackson now has 58 goals this season, the seventh-most in program history, while Maguire's 23 assists this year are also tied for seventh in program history.

Corinne Donohue, Meghan Wilson and Erin Farrell each posted three goals to lead the Lions and Farrell also added two assists. Rebecca Sartorio led the team with five ground balls and Corrinne Donohue and Wilson each added four draw controls.

In net, Gerling (9-4) finished with 10 stops for the Warriors to earn the win and Emily Hutson made five saves for the Lions.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 21, when they host Stevenson in Commonwealth Conference action at 4 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
