Warriors swept by Pride

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) had two hits and the Lycoming College softball team allowed Widener University just nine hits on Saturday afternoon, April 18, but Widener was able to sneak away from the Shangraw Athletic Complex with a 5-1 win in the first game and a 2-1 win in the second to sweep a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.

In the second game, Widener managed two unearned runs in the sixth inning and Lycoming left eight runners on base to fall 2-1.

The Warriors got on the board in the third inning when senior Kali Moeller (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) led off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt by sophomore Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg), took third on a bunt single by junior Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) and scored on a two-out single to left by Pugh.

The Warriors had two runners reach third and five reach second in the game, but the lone run that scored was Pugh's. Meanwhile, junior Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) pitched well in the circle for the Warriors, allowing just two hits in the first five innings.

In the sixth, Taylor Church led off with a double to center field. An error helped Angela Hood reach and she stole second before another error helped both runner score. After a bunt single and a fielder's choice loaded the bases, Weaver got out of the jam with two strikeouts and a fly out.

The Warriors had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, but a groundout and strikeout ended the threat. In the seventh, Lycoming again had runners reach first and second with two outs, but a groundout ended the game.

Weaver (5-6) allowed just four hits and no earned runs in the complete game. She struck out six and walked none. Ally Horvath (8-3) pitched the complete-game for the Pride, allowing four hits and four walks. She struck out five and allowed one run.

In the first game, senior Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) hit a home run, but Alexis Schengrund (10-1) threw a complete-game two-hitter to lift Widener to a 5-1 win.

Widener got on the board with two runs in the first thanks to an error, two hits and four stolen bases and added two more runs in the fourth thanks to two hits and a hit batter to take a 4-0 lead.

Lapano cut into the lead with a line shot homer in the bottom of the fourth, but Widener rounded out the scoring in the fifth with another run thanks to a hit batter and two errors.

Church led the Pride, going 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Schengrund struck out 14 and allowed hits to Lapano and Pugh. She walked three in the game. Freshman Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) (3-3) did a decent job matching her, allowing five hits and three earned runs in the complete game. She walked one.

The Warriors get back on the field on Sunday, April 19, when they host Lebanon Valley in a 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
