Warriors swept by Spartans

YORK, Pa. – Senior Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge Area) extended her games having reached base to 12 games to lead the Lycoming College softball team on Thursday afternoon, March 26, but York College (Pa.) was able to keep Lycoming from crossing the plate in both ends of a doubleheader, winning 4-0 in game one and 1-0 in game two, to sweep a non-conference doubleheader at Spartan Stadium.

Marianelli's reached base streak is the longest for the team since Amy Cline reached in 20 games in a row during the 2011 season. She walked in the first game before going 2-for-3 with a double in the second game to raise her batting average back to .500 (20-of-40).

The Warriors (8-4 overall) left four runners stranded at third base in the second game of the doubleheader, but couldn't get a runner across, as Courtney Martin finished off her second shutout of the day by allowing nine hits in a 1-0 win for the Spartans (11-5 overall).

The Warriors loaded the bases in the first inning, but a groundball double play to end the threat. In the fourth inning, the Warriors loaded the bases again before a groundout ended the threat. In the fifth, senior Kali Moeller (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) doubled and stole third with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. In the sixth, Marianelli doubled down the line and moved to third on a one-out sacrifice, but a popup ended the inning.

York got all the offense it needed in the fourth inning when Ashley Lechner led off with a homer.

Senior Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) (4-1) took the loss in the circle, allowing seven hits and one run in 4 1/3 innings. She walked one and struck out two. Freshman Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) struck out two and walked two in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless work.

Martin allowed nine hits and two walks, but stranded eight runners in the shutout win. She struck out four.

Junior Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) went 2-for-3 in the game along with Marianelli. Jayci Cristaudo went 2-for-4 and Emily Glatts went 2-for-2 to account for four of the York's seven hits.

In the first game of the doubleheader, sophomore Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) struck out a career-high eight batters, but a pair of two-run innings spoiled her six-hitter as York was able to post a 4-0 win.

Courtney Martin (9-5) earned the win for the Spartans, allowing four hits and two walks in the shutout. She struck out two. Weaver (4-2) also went the distance and didn't walk a batter, but she allowed two-run frames in the fourth and fifth innings.

Three hits in the fourth inning got York on the board, with Ashley Lechner delivering an RBI double before coming around to score. In the fifth, York used an RBI double by Jayci Cristaudo, who came around to score, to key the inning.

Four Warriors had hits in the game, with sophomore Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) blasting a double. York was led by two hits and a run from Katie Maloney.

The Warriors get back on the field on Sunday, March 29, when they host Alvernia in a 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
