Second-half surge lifts Warriors past Cougars, 13-8

DALLAS, Pa. – A run of five straight goals to start the second half helped the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team to a 13-8 non-conference win over Misericordia University on Wednesday night, March 25, at Mangelsdorf Field.

Heading into halftime with a one-goal lead, the Warriors (7-0 overall) responded with five-goal run in the first 10 minutes of the second period to break open the game. Junior Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) started the run with a fortuitous goal that bounced off the goaltender's stick and into the net just 31 seconds into the half. Senior Erin Cieniewicz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) ended the run with a whirling low shot into the left side of the net, dropping to her knees to fire the shot in on a give from senior Casey Maguire (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township).

With an 11-5 lead, Misericordia (2-6 overall) got back into the game with a pair of goals. A transition run led to a free-position shot for Jackson, who quickly scored, to regain the five-goal lead. To round out Lycoming's scoring freshman Jenna Hudson (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) found the back of the net with 5:41 left, while Misericordia scored 38 seconds later to round out the scoring.

Lycoming jumped out of the gate, with junior Savannah Fox (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) and Maguire scoring the first two goals in the game's first 49 seconds. Lycoming added another goal before Misericordia scored twice to cut the Warriors' lead to one. Misericordia got the lead back down to one goal twice more in the half, the last time with 4:32 left after Melina Juliano scored her second straight goal to make it, 6-5, heading into the break.

Jackson led the Warriors with five goals, while Maguire posted two goals and two assists. Cieniewicz notched three goals and Hudson posted two goals and four ground balls. Junior Kelsey Harshman (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert) notched two assists and three ground balls.

Alexandra Elmes led the Cougars with four goals, six ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers and Juliano added three.

Sophomore Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) (7-0) performed well in net for the Warriors, finished with 12 saves and three ground balls to earn the win. She also added an assist thanks to a long outlet pass to Cieniewicz for a goal in the first half. Katie McLoughlin added 10 saves and four ground balls in the loss for the Cougars.

The Warriors open the Commonwealth Conference season on Saturday, March 28, when they host Arcadia University at 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
