Warriors down Griffins

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – For just the second time in school history, the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team has started a season with five straight wins, as it posted an 18-4 win over Gwynedd Mercy in non-conference action at the Gwynedd Mercy Athletic Complex on Monday, March 16.
 
Junior Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Pa./Broadneck) led the Warriors (5-0 overall) once again, finishing with six goals, an assist and seven draw controls. Junior Savannah Fox (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) added four goals. Freshman Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), senior Casey Maguire (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) and freshman Caroline Mitchell (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) each added two goals, with Lazarich posting two assists and four ground balls and Maguire one assist.
 
Senior Erin Cieniewicz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) added three assists and senior Liz Francescone (Cream Ridge, N.J./Notre Dame) and junior Katie Cox (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) each caused three turnovers. Junior Erica Spero (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) scooped up three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
 
The Warriors are out to their best start since the 2007 team began the year 10-0 and helped it raise as high as 16th in the IWLCA Division III Coaches' Poll.
 
Lycoming jumped out to a 2-0 lead, with goals from Fox and Jackson coming in the first four minutes. Gwynedd Mercy (2-2 overall) cut the lead in half with a goal from Lauren Mitros with 24:50 left in the half, but 12 seconds later, Jackson won the draw, ran the field and scored easily to start a run of nine straight goals to make it 11-1 with 9:36 left in the first half. Gwynedd Mercy's Danae Perrymond ended the run, but Lycoming scored three more goals to end the half with a 14-2 lead.
 
In the second half, Lycoming scored four goals in the first 15 minutes before Gwynedd Mercy rounded out the scoring with the game's final two goals.
 
Perrymond led the Griffins with two goals and Kelsey Yori finished with a goal, five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
In net, sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) (5-0 overall) notched three saves to earn the win and Bria Gillard stopped four for the Griffins.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, March 18, when they host King's (Pa.) at 4 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
