NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior
Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Lycoming College softball team to an 8-0 win over Cazenovia and a three-run sixth inning in the nightcap helped Lycoming outlast Cairn, 5-4, at the North Myrtle Beach Complex on Wednesday, March 11.

The Warriors (5-1 overall) broke open a close one with a six-run fourth inning to secure the run-rule shortened win over Cazenovia in the day's first game.

Weaver (3-1), meanwhile, allowed just four runners to reach base in the game, hitting one batter, walking one, and allowing one single. One batter reached by error, but only two runners reached second base in the game. She struck out six.

Lycoming started its big fourth inning when junior
Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) singled to lead off. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before senior
Kali Moeller (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) delivered an RBI double to left field. An infield single by junior
Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) was followed by senior
Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Weaver delivered a sacrifice fly before senior
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) delivered an RBI single to center field.

Sophomore
Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) followed with a walk to load the bases before senior
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) walked to drive in a run, setting up Thomas, who delivered a two-RBI single to cap the six-run frame.

Lycoming took the lead with a  two-run second, as Lapano led off with a double, moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on a single to left field by junior
Ashley Burger (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area). A fielder's choice was followed by an RBI triple by Novak.

Marianelli led the Warriors offensively, going 3-for-3 with a run and RBI. Thomas went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI and Novak went 2-for-3 with a run, triple and RBI. Kelsey Schuette had the lone hit for the Wildcats (1-3 overall).

Taylor Spranger took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing 11 hits and eight runs in four innings. She waled two and struck out two.

In the nightcap, the Warriors used a three-run sixth inning to help hold off a late rally from Cairn (0-4 overall) to post a 5-4 win.

Holding a slim 2-1 lead heading into the sixth, the Warriors got started in the inning when freshman
Sam Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) singled to lead off. After a fielder's choice, junior
Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) delivered a single to right field. Novak followed with a grounder to third, but an error by the third baseman, helped score sophomore
Corrine Kline (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), who had reached on the original fielder's choice. With runners at second and third, sophomore
Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) delivered a single to left for two runs.

The Highlanders closed within a run in the bottom of the inning, using two hits, two errors and a walk to score the three runs. However, Lycoming starter Lapano (2-0) got out of the inning with a strikeout with runners on first and second and freshman
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) earned her second save of the year with a perfect seventh.

Lycoming got on the board in the second inning, as Thomas reached on an error, took second on a passed ball and scored on a single to left by Fischer. An RBI triple by Jessica Piccolo helped Cairn tie the score, but Lycoming took the lead in the fifth inning, as Marianelli singled to center before Lapano delivered an RBI double.

Marianelli finished 2-for-3 with a run to lead the Warriors, while Piccolo finished 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Highlanders.

Lapano allowed four hits, three walks and one earned run in six innings. She struck out 10 to earn the win. Tiffany Gower took the loss, allowing seven hits, three walks and two earned runs in six innings.

The Warriors wrap up their trip down South on Thursday, March 12, when they face La Roche at 9:30 a.m. and Principia at 3:30 p.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
