Warriors fall to first-place Mustangs to end season

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) finished with a team-high eight points and five rebounds to lead the Lycoming College women's basketball team, but first-place Stevenson held Lycoming to 28 percent from the floor to post a 64-38 Commonwealth Conference win at the Owings Mills Gymnasium on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The loss eliminates the Warriors (15-10 overall, 7-9 Commonwealth) from Commonwealth Conference Tournament contention, as Arcadia (12-12 overall, 8-7 Commonwealth) posted a 72-67 win over Messiah to clinch a playoff seed. Lebanon Valley (16-8 overall, 7-8 Commonwealth) fell to Alvernia, but even with a loss to Stevenson in the season finale, the Flying Dutchmen hold the tiebreaker over the Warriors thanks to a win over No. 2 playoff seed Albright on Jan. 31.

Ziminski finished her career with 560 career points, 311 rebounds and her three steals against the first-place Mustangs (21-2 overall, 15-0 Commonwealth) give her 171 in her career, the seventh-most in school history, and her 86 games started are eighth.

Fellow senior Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) finished with two points and two points, seven rebounds and a career-high tying four steals. She added one block, as she became the eighth player in school history to notch 50 in a career. She finished with 721 career points and 437 rebounds, while her 87 games started are sixth in school history.

The Warriors finished the season with 15 wins for the first time since the 2008-09 season and set a school record by allowing just 58.1 points per game, besting the mark of 58.4 set by the 1991-92 team.

The Warriors took an early 4-0 lead after jumpers by sophomore Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) and Derr, but Stevenson fought back and took its first lead at 9-8 when Stephanie Martinez hit a 3-pointer with 11:48 left, which started a 19-7 run by the Mustangs that helped it take a 28-15 lead with 1:59 left in the half. The Warriors closed the half with four of the last seven points to head into the break down 31-19.

In the second half, the Mustangs started the period with the first nine points over the first six minutes to take a 21-point lead before freshman Cassandra Bendyk (Pleasant Mount, Pa./Forest City Regional)  finally ended the run with an old-fashioned 3-point play with 13:52 left to make it 40-22. The Warriors couldn't get any closer than that, though, the rest of the way.

The Warriors got six points each from freshman Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford), who also added two blocks, Calella, who added three assists and two steals, and junior Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers). Calella's 92 assists this season are 10th-most in school history.

Sara Tarbert led the Mustangs with 17 points, 11 rebounds and five steals and Kyarra Harmon notched nine points and six rebounds. Caitlin Roy posted eight points and Ty Bender notched six points and five steals.
