Warriors use free throws to down Stevenson

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – In the double bonus with 9:21 left in the second half, the Lycoming College men's basketball team used the charity stripe to post 27 of its 51 second-half points en route to a 78-66 win over Stevenson in MAC Commonwealth action at Lamade Gym on Saturday, Dec. 5.

The Warriors (5-1 overall, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth) beat the Mustangs (2-5 overall, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) for the first time in three meetings at Lamade Gym.

An ejection of a Stevenson player with 9:21 left in the game left the Warriors with four free throws and freshman T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) hit all four to take a 52-48 lead and after getting the ball back, junior David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) added two more free throws to make it 54-48.

The Mustangs got a 3-pointer from Christian Roberts to cut the lead in half, but the Warriors got the next two buckets, with sophomore Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) tipping-in a second chance bucket to make it, 48-41. The Mustangs never got back within a possession, and Lycoming used a run of 10 straight points to make it a 15-point lead with 2:28 left at 71-56 before Stevenson was able to cut the lead down to 10 points in the final minute. However, senior Eric Ishman (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) hit a pair of free throws and after a defensive rebound by Johnson, Lycoming was able to run out the clock for a 78-66 win.

Lycoming jumped out to an 11-4 lead with 15:15 left in the first half and they never trailed the rest of the way, bringing the lead to as many as eight points before the Mustangs closed the half on a 6-1 run to make it 27-24 at the break.

In the second half, the Warriors scored the first four points of the half before Stevenson fought back, eventually taking a 38-37 lead off a 3-pointer from Stephen Zink before a 3-pointer from Christian Roberts gave Stevenson a 41-38 lead with 14:50 left. Roberts continued to shoot well, with another 3-pointer helping the Mustangs to a four-point advantage, which they held at 48-44 with 11:45 left after a fastbreak bucket by Erik Fisher.

Junior Nykolas King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhatten Center for Science & Math) answered with a  layup and two free throws to tie the game at 48 with 10:21 before the Warriors began their final run.

The Warriors shot just 37 percent (24-of-65) from the field and struggled from deep, hitting just one 3-pointer, but Lycoming dominated inside, grabbing 23 offensive rebounds which led to 15 second-chance points and 42 in the paint. The Warriors also held a 21-8 advantage in points off turnover and scored 16 in transition.

Four Warriors finished in double figures, led by 16 points, six rebounds and three steals from King and Johnson added 15 points and four steals. Sophomore Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) added his first career double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks and Duckett finished with 12 points.

Newbold added eight points and a career-high 10 rebounds to go with two steals and Ishman also finished with six points.
