T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) hit five 3-pointers and senior
Eric Ishman (Jamaica, N.Y./Christ the King) added three more as the Lycoming College men's basketball team had a good shooting performance in an 82-60 win over the College at Old Westbury in the championship game of the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Lamade Gym.
Duckett finished with a game-high 19 points to earn the tournament MVP honors, as Lycoming claimed the title for the fourth time in the six years of the event and the first time since 2012. Ishman added nine points and a steal and junior
Nykolas King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science & Math) earned all-tournament team honors after posting 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.
Lycoming (9-2 overall) dominated both inside (36 points in the paint and a 43-34 rebounding advantage) and out (11-of-22 from 3-point range) while shooting a solid 46 percent (30-of-65) from the floor and holding Old Westbury (5-6 overall) to 33 percent (19-of-57) from the floor.
After the Panthers opened the game with the first four points, the Warriors began to get rolling, with 3-pointers from junior
David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) and Duckett highlighting a run of eight straight points. Old Westbury scored seven of the first nine to get the lead back, but a fastbreak bucket by King off a give from junior
Willie Kee (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) started another 10-point run by the Warriors.
The Panthers cut the lead down to seven with 6:45 left in the half, but Duckett responded with back-to-back 3-pointers as the Warriors went on another 10-point run to make it 32-15 with 4:34 left. The Panthers closed the half on a 10-5 run, heading into the locker room down 12 after Ishman canned a 3-pointer as time ran out on the half from the left wing.
King hit a 3-pointer to start the second half for the Warriors and the Panthers didn't get closer than 13 points in the half, while Lycoming expanded the lead to as many as 22 late in the game, allowing the team to play all 15 dressed players, with 11 finding the scoring column.
Sophomore
Roger Wilson (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) finished with 10 points and five rebounds and freshman
Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) added eight points and seven rebounds. Both Kee and sophomore
Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) each added six points, with Kee also posting four assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Cody Zafran led the Panthers with 17 points and Lylle Ryals added 13 points, three 3-pointers and four rebounds. Kaleem Edwards also added 10 points, four assists and three blocks.
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 2, when they head to Widener for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader, with the women tipping at 1 p.m. before the men play at 3 p.m.
