Warriors fall to Falcons

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) notched eight kills, 10 digs and a block to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team on Wednesday night, Oct. 7, but Messiah College was able to hit .307 in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-16) MAC Commonwealth win at Lamade Gym.
 
Senior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) added seven kills and hit .312 and junior Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) posted six kills and six digs for the Warriors (14-7 overall, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth). Freshman Emily Hepner (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) notched seven digs and two aces and sophomore Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) added 19 assists and seven digs.
 
The Falcons (16-1 overall, 4-1 MAC Commonwealth) hit better than .300 in the first and third sets and had sideouts in more than 60 percent of the points during all three sets. Kristen Douglas led the team with 13 kills, seven digs and four aces and Jane Underman posted nine kills, seven digs and three aces. Alyssa Vorbeck added eight kills and Brooks Gallagher notched six kills, 31 assists and nine digs. Emily Zellers also added nine digs.
 
The two teams fought through seven ties and four lead changes in the first half before Messiah ultimately took control with a four-point run that made it 21-17. The Warriors closed within a point at 21-20, but the Falcons scored four of the last five points to take the set.
 
In the second set, Messiah took a 17-9 lead en route to the 25-17 win and in the third set, they took a 20-9 lead en route to the 25-16 win.
 
The Warriors get back into action on Saturday, Oct. 10, when they head to Stevenson University for a MAC Commonwealth tri-match, facing Hood at 1 p.m. before the host Stevenson at 3 p.m.
