Fink, Burger leads Warriors to split at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) and sophomore Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) each notched double-doubles in a pair of MAC Commonwealth matches on Saturday, Oct. 10, as the Lycoming College volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over Hood and fell, 3-1, to three-time defending conference champion Stevenson at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
 
Four Warriors finished in double-figure kills and after outlasting Hood in a key third-set win, the Warriors were able to post a 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 29-27, 25-12) win in a critical MAC Commonwealth victory for the team.
 
Junior Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) led the team with 13 kills and 13 digs and senior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) added 13 kills, hitting .353, four blocks and two aces. Junior Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) notched 10 kills and three blocks and junior Tayler Whitman (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) added 10 kills and three digs.
 
Freshman Cheyenne Altland (East Berlin, Pa./Delone Catholic) added five kills and five blocks and junior Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) posted five kills and seven digs. Burger finished with 43 assists, 12 digs, three kills three aces and two blocks. Freshman Emily Hepner (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) led the team with 28 digs.
 
Lycoming hit .300 in the first set and .400 in the fourth, but struggled to .198 in the middle two sets. After dropping the second set, the Warriors fought back-and-forth with the Blazers (11-10 overall, 2-4 MAC Commonwealth) throughout the set, with neither team getting more than a two-point lead. Hood had the first set point at 24-23, but Lycoming would get the next four before Whitman finally dropped in the set-clinching kill.
 
Hood was led by 18 kills from Elena Young and 38 assists and 13 digs from Payton Belella. Brenna Elizondo added 15 digs.
 
The Warriors took a set off Stevenson for the first time in school history, but weren't able to complete the upset against the defending champs, falling 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17).
 
Fink posted 10 kills and 17 digs and Burger added 30 assists and 10 digs to lead the Warriors in the match. Altland added eight kills, Richardson posted seven and Jahn six. Slawson finished with five kills and 19 digs and Hepner posted 24 digs.
 
Stevenson was led by 16 kills and 11 digs from Annika Schwartz and 13 kills and five blocks from Moriah Savage. Sara Bollinger finished with 43 assists, nine digs and four kills and Deanna Bradbury posted 26 digs.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m., when they head to Alvernia for a key MAC Commonwealth match.
