Warrriors fall to Royals in four sets

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) led the Lycoming College volleyball team with 13 kills and a block on her Senior Night, but the University of Scranton hit .297 in the match to post a 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16) win in non-conference play at Lamade Gym on Tuesday night, Oct. 27.
 
Richardson became the sixth player in school history to cross 1,250 kills with her 10th of 13 in the night, as she led the Warriors (17-12 overall) with a .333 hitting percentage. Freshman Cheyenne Altland (East Berlin, Pa./Delone Catholic) posted seven kills and four blocks and junior Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) added seven kills and 10 digs. Junior Tayler Whitman (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) also added five kills, three digs and a block.
 
Sophomore Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) posted 36 assists, seven digs and three aces and freshman Emily Hepner (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) posted 11 digs and one kill.
 
The Warriors fell behind, 2-0, as Scranton opened the match by posting a 74 percent sideout percentage and hit .367 through those first two sets. Lycoming fought back in the third set, though, limiting Scranton to a .125 hitting percentage, and rallied from an 18-15 deficit with a five-point run from junior Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) starting the rally. Lycoming then finished the set on a kill from Jahn. In the fourth set, Scranton hit .333 to clinch the 25-16 win.
 
Scranton was led by 16 kills, three aces and three blocks from Stephanie Klug and 15 kills and two blocks from Kristin Kirwin. Brittany Cafiero added 36 assists and eight digs and Kim Marino posted 13 digs. Rachael Cisto added seven kills and four blocks.
 
The Warriors will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 31 when they head to York College of Pennsylvania for a tri-match, facing York (Pa.) at 3 p.m. and Salisbury at 5 p.m.
