READING, Pa. – Sophomore
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and senior
Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) each scored twice to lift the Lycoming College women's soccer team to its first win over Alvernia University since 2009, as Lycoming posted a 4-1 MAC Commonwealth win on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 17.
Â
Lazarich helped bring the Warriors (8-7 overall, 1-4 MAC Commonwealth) back from a 1-0 deficit, tying the game just before halftime, firing a shot off the post that rolled back into the net for her 10
th goal of the year.
Â
After halftime, Lazarich continued her assault, dribbling past the goalie in a breakaway situation and firing it into an open net in the 52
nd minute. Jackson got started later in the half, adding insurance in the 74
th minute with a shot from the left side that bent into the goal, then in the 80
th minute, she fired in a shot over the goalie's head from inside the goal box.
Â
The duo has 25 combined goals on the season, more than any other pair of Warrior forwards in program history. Jackson's 14 goals are tied for second in program history with Lazarich's rookie campaign in 2014 and Donna Mongiello's 2001 campaign. She is one goal shy of the school record of 15 set by Danielle Curry in 2004. Lazarich's 11 goals are tied for seventh in program history, while her 25 career scores are already fourth in school history.
Â
Alvernia (3-11-1 overall, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board first, with Johnna Shank scoring on a breakaway in the sixth minute.
Â
Lycoming finished with 22 shots in the game, with 12 coming on target, forcing Alvernia's Jessica Plunkett (3-9) to make eight saves. Alvernia took 19 shots, with freshman goalkeeper
Helen Ross (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) (7-6) also making eight saves to earn the win. She made half those saves in the game's first 17 minutes, as Alvernia took seven shots in the first 20 minutes and just 12 in the final 70.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they head to Lebanon Valley for a 4 p.m. MAC Commonwealth matchup.
