Warriors fall in heartbreaker to Crusaders

READING, Pa. – Sophomore Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) posted her second career 60-assist match on a night where she became the sixth player in school history to notch 2,000 in a career for the Lycoming College volleyball team, but Alvernia University was able to outlast Lycoming, 3-2 (15-25, 27-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-8) at McCloskey Court on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Burger's 60 assists and 10 digs were one of three double-doubles in the match for the Warriors (15-9 overall, 2-5 MAC Commonwealth). Junior Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) added 15 kills, a career-high 29 digs and three aces and junior Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) added 14 kills and 20 digs.

Burger, meanwhile, finished with 60 assists, the second-most in her career, as she surpassed 2,000 career assists with her ninth helper of the night.

Senior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) and freshman Cheyenne Altland (East Berlin, Pa./Delone Catholic) each added 12 kills, with Richardson also posting eight digs and three blocks. Freshman Emily Hepner (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) added 18 digs.

Down 21-17 in the fourth set, Hepner served up five straight points to give Lycoming the lead back and Fink was able to put the punctuation point on the comeback with a kill to give Lycoming a 25-23 win. In the fifth set, however, Alvernia (12-12 overall, 3-2 MAC Commonwealth) hit .611 (11-0-18) en route to the 15-8 win.

The Warriors hit .345 and posted a 75 percent sideout percentage in the first set while cruising to a 25-15 win, but the Crusaders scrapped back into the match, fighting back from a 12-9 deficit in the second set to post a 27-25 win. In the third set, the Crusaders won the last five points, with McKenna Achenbach posting two late blocks to help the team to the 25-19 win.

A pair of Warriors also reached other milestones in the match, as Richardson reached 1,200 career kills and junior Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) reached 700 kills.

Kristine Sipling led the Crusaders with 19 kills, hitting .471, and Emily Smith added 14 kills and a team-high 26 digs. Lauryn Snuder posted 31 assists and Abby O'Donnell had 26.

The Warriors get back on the court on Monday, Oct. 19, when they host Lancaster Bible in a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Lamade Gym.
