WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Having opened the season with four straight shutouts, the Lycoming College men's soccer team will look to tie the school record of five on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m., when it renews its rivalry with Penn College in the Battle for the Lumber at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Â
The Warriors (3-0-1 overall) have been led by its defense, which has allowed just 21 shots through the first four games, a paltry average of 5.3 per game. The team is coming off a 3-0 win over Pitt-Bradford on Sunday, Sept. 7, as senior
Luke Klingler (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area), freshman
Kyle Thomas (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and freshman
Keenthy Yeboah (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) scored in the win.
Â
The Wildcats (2-2 overall) are coming off back-to-back 2-1 overtime losses at SUNYIT and SUNY Cobleskill. The team is led by senior Tristan Smith, who has two goals on the season, and junior Tarik Laroche, who has a goal and an assist.
Â
The rivalry between the two schools is beginning to reach its fruition with Penn College joining NCAA Division III for the 2014-15 season. The two men's soccer programs have played just five times since 2005, with the Warriors holding a 3-0-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Battle of the Lumber has been hosted twice, in 2010 and 2011, with the Warriors winning 2-0, in 2010 and the teams playing to a 0-0 draw in 2011.
Â
The trophy game is named in honor of the history of the city of Williamsport as the Lumber Capitol of the World in the late 1800s. Perhaps appropriately, the trophy never rests far from Millionaire's Row, the most visible remaining link to that period, as large 100-plus year-old mansions line Fourth Street – which serves as the southern edge of the Lycoming College campus and the northern edge of the Penn College campus just a short walk away.
