Warriors draw with Monarchs in NCAA rematch

Box Score

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – In a physical and grueling rematch of the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Tournament, the No. 23 Lycoming College men's soccer team withstood playing a man down for both overtimes and two men down for the last two minutes to earn a draw with King's College, 1-1, on Tuesday night, Sept. 30, in Lycoming's final non-conference game of the season.

The Warriors, who beat King's 1-0 in that 2013 first round game, wrap up their non-conference slate with an 8-0-3 record, extending its school record for most games played to open a season without a loss to 11. The team has not played from behind yet during the 2014 season.

Lycoming was able to score first, as freshman Abdullahi Abdi (Seattle, Wash./James Garfield) drilled a penalty kick goal in the 21st minute after King's picked up its first of five yellow cards in the game.

In the second half, King's was able to get the equalizer in the 82nd minute, as Daniel Hernandez scored unassisted. Six minutes later, a Warrior defender was issued a red card, leaving the Warriors a man down and King's (7-3-1 overall) came close to winning it soon after, as a header by Billy Brown hit the crossbar in the 88th minute.

That was the best chance King's would get until the end of the game, as the Monarchs had just two corner kicks and no shots throughout the overtime, while the Warriors managed three corner kicks and three shots, even as a second yellow card to another Warrior left the team down two players with 1:48 left in the second overtime.

The Warriors held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks, but King's had an 11-10 advantage in shots.

Senior Connor Keenan (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) stopped five shots through the 110 minutes in net for the Warriors and Tyler Wilson made six stops for King's.

Lycoming opens its eight-match Commonwealth Conference season on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they host Alvernia at 2 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
