Warriors split on second day of Lycoming Invitational

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) sewed up a spot on the Lycoming Invitational All-Tournament Team with 35 kills and 27 digs on the second day of the tournament, leading the Lycoming College volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Elmira (25-12, 21-25, 26-24, 25-12) and a tough 3-2 loss to Pitt-Bradford (22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12) at Lamade Gym on Saturday, Sept. 13.
 
Junior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) also performed well for the team, notching 25 kills in the two matches, becoming the 11th player in school history to reach 800 career kills.
 
The Warriors finished the invitational 1-3 to fall to 8-5, but played five-set matches against Houghton and Bradford.
 
Lycoming started the day by hitting a solid .307 (54-15-127) to post the 3-1 over Elmira, as the team started the match by hitting .464 in the first set.
 
Jahn led the team with 16 kills and 13 digs and sophomore Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) added a season-high 13 kills and 11 digs to go with three aces and two blocks. Both junior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) and sophomore Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) each posted nine kills. Richardson also added three aces and two blocks.
 
Freshman Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) notched 46 assists, 10 digs, three aces and three blocks and senior Amber Seibel (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) posted 17 digs.
 
Ashley Heiman led the Soaring Eagles (2-6 overall) with 11 kills and four blocks and both Kiersten Derr and Amanda Blinkinsop notched 14 digs. Paola Ortiz added seven kills and six aces.
 
Despite outhitting Pitt-Bradford in the second match, posting seven more kills and hitting 41 percentage points better, the Panthers used 12 blocks and 13 aces to sneak away from Lamade Gym with the 3-2 win.
 
The Warriors had opportunities to close the match out, tying the match at 20 in the fourth set before the Panthers closed the set on a 5-2 run. In the fifth set, the two teams fought to a tie at 10 before another 5-2 run by the Panthers closed the match.
 
Jahn led the Warriors with 19 kills and 14 digs and Richardson added 16 kills, hitting .519, with four digs and two blocks. Fink notched nine kills, three aces and 19 digs and Burger posted four kills, 52 assists and 14 digs. Seibel added 13 digs.
 
Taylor McMillen led the Panthers with 22 kills and six blocks and Brittany Watts posted 10 kills and six blocks. Brittni Cumberland posted eight kills, 19 assists and seven digs. Kaitlin McCann and Cumberland each also added three aces.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Tuesday, Sept. 16, when they host Arcadia at 7 p.m. to open their Commonwealth Conference season.
