Box Score / Photo GalleryWILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – There wasn't a lot of space between freshman
Keenthy Yeboah (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and the Ursinus College defender. There also wasn't a lot of space between the crossbar and the goalie's hands, but in each case there was just enough for the ball to slip past for the lone goal in the Lycoming College men's soccer team's 2014 opener, winning 1-0, on a beautiful Friday afternoon, Aug. 29, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
With a large crowd of 370 out to watch the defending Commonwealth Conference champions, the Warriors (1-0 overall) dialed up a shutout for the win over Ursinus (0-1 overall), allowing just seven shots, three in the second half while firing 12 shots on the Bears.
The game winning play occurred in the 60
th minute, as freshman
Abdullahi Abdi (Seattle, Wash./James Garfield) made a move past a defender and fired a low, quick pass to Yeboah in the middle of the field. Yeboah connected and sent the ball high into the upper part of the center of the net.
After being outshot, 4-3, in the first half, the Warriors settled into a groove in the second half, taking 12 shots and keeping pressure on throughout the period. Ursinus had a couple chances to score thanks to the fancy footwork of 2013 All-Centennial Conference forward Ryan Butler, but Lycoming's senior keeper
Connor Keenan (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) made two nice diving saves to preserve the shutout.
Keenan (1-0) stopped four shots to earn his sixth shutout in the last seven contests. Daniel Cartwright (0-1) stopped three shots for the Bears.
The Warriors get back on the field on Sunday, Aug. 31, when they face Keystone in a 3:30 p.m. non-conference match.
