Box Score 2 WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore
Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) threw a three-hit shutout and junior
Caroline Lapano (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) followed with a one-hitter to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a dominating sweep of Hood, 3-0 and 11-0, in Commonwealth Conference action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on a beautiful Sunday, April 6.
Weaver (7-5) was dominating in the first game, allowing just two runners into scoring position while striking out four and retiring nine in a row at one point to lead the Warriors to a 3-0 win in the first game.
While Weaver retired the first seven batters she faced, the Warriors (10-9 overall, 3-5 Commonwealth) couldn't have started any quicker. Lapano led off the first inning by blasting the first pitch of the game over the fence, just inside the left field foul line. The Warriors continued to rally, as junior
Katie Pugh (Sykesville, Md./Century) reached on a walk before junior
Nikki Marianelli (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) followed with a single to right. After a flyout, Weaver drove in a run with a double into the right field corner. A groundout brought Marianelli in.
While the Warriors had five more runners reach base in the game, the team could not scratch any more runs across. Weaver made sure it wasn't necessary, though. In the third, a pair of hits helped runners reach second and third for the Blazers (13-9 overall, 1-5 Commonwealth) with one out, she got a pair of groundouts to end the frame, starting a run of nine straight batters retired before a single with one out in the sixth ended the stretch. However, Weaver rebounded to retire the last five batters in a row.
She struck out four in the game while walking none. Hood starter Keerstie Robinson (7-4) took the loss, allowing six hits and three runs in six innings. She walked two and struck out two.
Lapano led the Warriors, going 2-for-3 with the homer, while Marianelli went 2-for-3 with a run and Weaver 2-for-3 with a RBI.
In the second game, Lapano allowed just a first-inning, two-out single, while the Warriors broke open the game with a seven-run first-inning and never looked back en route to the 11-0 run-rule shortened five-inning contest.
Sophomore
Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) led the inning off with a walk. After a fielder's choice, Marianelli and sophomore
Ashley Witmer (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) followed with singles to load the bases. Lapano got the first run across with a single to center field before Weaver delivered a two-run double to right center to make it 3-0.
After a groundout for the second out, sophomore
Shawna Risley (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle) walked to reload the bases for sophomore
Ashley Burger (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area), who delivered a double to left center to score two runs before Risley scored on a throwing error. Novak followed with a single to center to bring in Burger with the last run of the inning.
Lapano (3-4), meanwhile, settled in after a walk to lead off the second inning, retiring 11 in a row before a runner reached with two outs in the fifth on an error. A groundout ended the game, giving Lapano the one-hit shutout. She walked one and struck out three.
The Warriors earned the run-rule win in the fourth, scoring four times, as Marianelli walked with one out. After a fielder's choice, Lapano drew a walk, setting up a three-run blast to center from Weaver. Sophomore
Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) followed with a line drive homer over the left field wall to round out the inning.
Weaver led the Warriors, as she went 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBI to pace the team's 11 hit attack. Thomas went 2-for-3 with a homer and Witmer and Lapano each scored twice.
Jennifer Rutherford (6-4) took the loss for the Blazers, allowing 10 hits and 10 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Due to threat of rain all Monday afternoon, April 7, the Lycoming College softball team's doubleheader against Mount Aloysius scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex has been cancelled. The Warriors (10-9 overall) get back on the field on Wednesday, April 9, when they host Susquehanna at 3 p.m.
