Warriors finish conference tournament ninth

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A second round 86 helped junior William Dietz (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield Area) jump seven spots on the leaderboard and sophomore Zach Layser (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO) continued to lead the Lycoming College golf team by finishing 26th to highlight the team's efforts at the Commonwealth Conference Championship at the par-71, 6,551-yard Hershey Country Club East Course on Saturday, April 26.
 
The Warriors improved their second-day score by eight strokes, helping it finish in ninth place in the 10-team field, 21 strokes ahead of Hood College. Messiah College won the team title by seven strokes over Stevenson, finishing with a two-day total of 641. Austin Galaska of Messiah won the individual medallist honors by posting a two-day score of 153, seven strokes ahead of Stevenson's Will Ellis and Messiah's Brian Loesser.
 
Dietz recorded the best round for the Warriors on the second day of the tournament, improving his score by eight strokes to drop seven slots in the standings to finish 31st, thanks to a 5-over par 41 on the front nine after posting a 51 in Saturday's first round.
 
Layser continued to lead the Warriors at the event, finishing 26th. After a first day 90, he turned in cards of 44 on the front and back nine to improve his score by two strokes and help him drop six spots in the team standings.
 
Junior Nic McGee (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) also dropped his score on the second day of the tournament, carding a 91 after a first round 93 to finish in 36th place.
 
Senior Zack Czap (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) and junior John Koch (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) both wrapped up the tournament with scores of 98, with Czap finishing 43rd and Koch 47th.
 
Despite struggling through a weather-filled spring, the team showed tremendous improvement in 2014, finishing with a 363.8 stroke average in four rounds under 14th-year head coach Jamie Spencer. The stroke average is the lowest for the Warriors since 2009, when the team turned in a 363.6 average.
