Warriors fall to Dutchmen

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) stopped 11 shots and junior Kari Rybak (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) scored twice to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team, but a late eight-goal run by Lebanon Valley College helped it put away Lycoming, 16-4, in Commonwealth Conference action on Wednesday, March 26.
 
The Flying Dutchmen (8-2 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) were able to open an 8-4 game thanks to three free-position shots in the middle of the second half before the Dutchmen added five more goals late in the half.
 
After the Dutchmen started the game with five goals, the Warriors (4-5 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) stepped into the game when junior Erin Cieniewicz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) picked up a loose ball in front of the net and scored with 13:16 left in the half. The Dutchmen scored twice more, but the Warriors responded late in the half, as sophomore Savannah Fox (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) scored on a free-position shot with 16 seconds left.
 
In the second half, the Warriors stayed within five goals, scoring the first goal, as Rybak took a dish from freshman Leanne Shaw (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) for a score. After Lebanon Valley answered, junior Casey Maguire (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) found Rybak for a goal to make it 8-4 with 20:53 left before the Dutchmen started their final run.
 
Shaw led the Warriors with six ground balls and an assist and Cieniewicz posted five ground balls and a goal. Freshman Elizabeth VanHorn (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) posted three ground balls and junior Alysha Conley (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) controlled three draws.
 
Tori Kuntz led the Dutchmen with five goals, an assist and three ground balls and Sam Boyce notched four goals, two assists and seven draws. Bailey Benz posted two goals, three assists, three draws, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
 
In net, Gerling (4-5) stopped 11 shots to give her 102 on the season. She stopped seven shots in the first half and four in the second. Lebanon Valley's Shelby Morris (8-2) earned the win, making one save off Lycoming's eight shots.
 
The Warriors wrap up their four-game homestand on Saturday, March 29, when they host Alvernia in a key Commonwealth Conference match. The game is set for 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
