Newbold, Warriors cruise to 86-71 win over Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) scored a career-high 19 points and the Lycoming College men's basketball team's pressing defense forced 30 turnovers and produced 21 steals as the team cruised to an 86-71 win over crosstown rival Penn College on Sunday, Dec. 14, at Bardo Gym.

Newbold showed off his high-flying prowess, finishing 8-of-14 from the field and he also picked up two steals. He was the lone Warrior in double-figures, but 14 players entered the scorebook, including nine players with six points or more, as the team improved to 5-4 overall.

The Warriors posted 32 points off turnovers and scored 10 more in transition, while 38 came in the paint, as Lycoming held a 21-7 advantage in steals and a slim 47-46 advantage in rebounding.

Penn College (2-7 overall) took an early 4-0 lead, but the Warriors responded with 13 straight points to take a 13-4 lead with 14:21 left in the first half. Newbold and sophomore Nykolas King (Manhattan, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science & Math) led the run with four points a piece.

Penn College closed back within six points with 5:39 left in the half thanks to a 9-2 run, but freshman Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) hit a layup and senior Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) canned a 3-pointer to help the Warriors ignite on a 7-0 run. The Wildcats cut the lead to nine at 38-29 at the break.

The Wildcats closed within seven points twice early in the half, but an old-fashioned 3-point play by junior John Monkam (Lanham, Md./DuVal) put Lycoming's lead back in double digits with 16:51 left, where it stayed the rest of the game. The Warriors expanded the lead to as many as 21 with 10:03 left after a 3-pointer from freshman Issak Bodon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) made it 68-47.

The Wildcats did close within 13 points twice late in the game, but the Warriors were able to close out the comfortable win, as freshman Tyler Gardner (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) scored his first career bucket with three seconds left to round out the win.

Both Bodon and King finished with eight points, while Monkam, freshman Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) and James each posted seven. Freshman Chris Craft (Waldorf, Md./Westlake), freshman Casey Vickers (Terre Haute, Ind./Bridgton Academy) and Dougher each added six points. Junior Armani Taylor (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bowie) led the team with five steals, four points, four assists and six rebounds. Vickers also added four assists and two steals.

Bryce Lonsway led the Wildcats with 13 points and four rebounds. Ezra Adams posted 11 points, 14 rebounds and five assists and Nathaniel Brown and Cass Wisniewski each also posted 11 points.

The Warriors get back on the court with the opening round of the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament, when they host Penn State Brandywine on Monday, Dec. 29, at 6 p.m. at Lamade Gym.
