Warriors fall to Crusaders

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Freshman Issak Bodon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) finished with a career-high 14 points and four rebounds and senior Malcolm Covington (Queens, N.Y./Blessed Sacrament) added 12 points and five assists to lead the Lycoming College men's basketball team, but a tough Susquehanna University squad posted a 91-71 win in non-conference action at O.W. Houts Gymnasium on Tuesday night, Nov. 18.

Six Warriors (1-2 overall) finished with at least seven points, as freshman Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) posted nine points and six rebounds and both freshman Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) and senior Patrick Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) added eight points apiece. Freshman  Justin Iton (Hackensack, N.J./Dwight Morrow) added seven points.

The Warriors scored the first three points of the game, all from Iton, but Susquehanna (1-0 overall) came back to tie it twice more before taking the lead for good on a layup by Steven Weidlich with 14:27 left that made it 9-7. The Crusaders added a 17-4 run late in the first half to take a 36-17 lead with 1:17 left before the Warriors were able to close the gap to 14 at the break at 38-24.

After Susquehanna scored the first bucket of the second half, the Warriors posted seven in a row, with Newbold and Covington hitting layups to close within nine points at 40-31 with 17:41 left and a minute and a half later, Iton hit a jumper to close the gap to 43-345, but Susquehanna scored the next six points and were able to keep the lead in double figures the rest of the way, using a 22-9 run midway through the half to pull away.

Susquehanna held a 60-37 advantage on the glass, which helped them to 34 points in the paint and 17 second-chance points. Brandon Hedley led the team with 19 points, six assists and four rebounds and Weidlich added 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ryan Traub posted 13 points and 17 rebounds and Danny Weiss notched 10 points and five boards.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Nov. 22, when they head to the back-to-back defending Commonwealth Conference champions Alvernia at 3 p.m.
