Derr’s double-double leads Warriors past Mounties, 70-53

CARLISLE, Pa. – Senior Ali Derr (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) kicked off her final season with the Lycoming College women's basketball program by posting 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead the team to a 70-53 win over Mount Aloysius in the first round of the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament at the Kline Center.

The Warriors (1-0 overall) move on to face Dickinson College in the championship game of the tournament on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. The Devils beat CCNY, 76-48, in the other first round game.

Derr also crossed 500 career points in the game, as Lycoming held a solid 49-37 advantage on the glass against the Mounties (0-1 overall), who were finalists in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in 2013-14.

The Warriors had six players with at least eight points, as junior Victoria Siebecker (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) notched 10 points, thanks to two 3-pointers, and the starting guard trio of senior Janelle Ziminski (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area), junior Olivia Manges (York, Pa./West York) and senior Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) each added nine points apiece. Ziminski also added four steals. Freshman Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) notched eight points, four rebounds and two blocks and junior Chelsea Henderson (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) posted three points and eight rebounds.

With the score tied at 14 midway through the first half, the Warriors scored the next 11 points to take control of the game, as Derr scored four points during the run and Ziminski and Siebecker added treys to help the team take a 25-14 lead with 5:15 left in the half. The Mounties closed within five with 2:32 left in the half, but the Warriors answered with seven straight points, as Siebecker hit a three pointer and Manges canned a pair of jumpers to make it 35-23 with 1:21 left in the half.

Mount Aloysius closed within nine at halftime at 35-26, but could get no closer than seven in the second half before the Warriors permanently got the lead into double figures on an offensive putback by freshman Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) with 13:38 left.

Eight players factored into the scoring for the Warriors in the second half and 15 players saw court time as the Warriors won a season-opener for the first time since 2010.

Mount Aloysius was led by 12 points and six rebounds from Abby Kulick and 11 points and three blocks from Sydney Horel. Kaleigh Roop added eight points and four rebounds.
