Warriors drop heartbreaker to Crusaders in double overtime

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Despite taking a two-goal lead midway through the first half, the Lycoming College women's soccer team succumbed to a three-goal rally by Alvernia University, falling 3-2 in double overtime, in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams on a rainy Saturday morning, Oct. 4, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Lycoming (3-9 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) struck quick and fast in the first half, with sophomore Amanda Wisolmerski (Florham Park, N.J./Florham Park) getting the team on the board in the 23rd minute by delivering a free kick into the left corner of the net.

Just four minutes later, freshman Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) delivered her 11th goal of the season on a breakaway, firing a shot into the center of the net after busting free on the left side of the field. The goal leaves the rookie four shy of the school's single-season record of 15 set by Danielle Curry in 2004.

Alvernia (5-6 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) shook off the deficit late in the half, though, with Shannon Browne breaking free and finding Alexis Benton for a goal in the 41st minute before Browne lofted a corner kick that Taylor Smith headed in to tie it in the 44th minute.

Each team had chances in the second half and first overtime, with Alvernia forced to make five saves in that time and the Warriors' keeper, freshman Joelle Winey (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) making four, but neither time could find the net until Benton did in the 102nd minute, scoring on a breakaway off a cross, firing the goal into the left corner.

Winey finished with six saves and Alvernia keeper Jessica Plunkett earned the win by playing the final 79 minutes. She made five saves and did not allow a goal.

Benton scored twice and Browne added two assists to lead the Crusaders, who held a 15-13 advantage in shots over the Warriors.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, Oct. 7, when they head to top-ranked Messiah for a 7 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game.
