Warriors clinch No. 4 seed with win over Albright

READING, Pa. – A 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-14) win over Albright College on Wednesday night, Oct. 22 helped the Lycoming College volleyball team clinch the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference Tournament , assuring the team its first home postseason contest since 2006.

The Warriors (17-13 overall, 5-3 Commonwealth) also assured themselves of at least a .500 season for the third straight year, as sophomore Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) led the way with 17 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Catherine Burger (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) notched 48 assists, seven digs, six kills and three blocks, as she became the first freshman in program history to post 1,000 assists in a season.

Lycoming will host the Commonwealth Conference Tournament's first round game between the No. 4 and No. 5 seed on Monday, Nov. 3, with an opponent yet to be determined, as some schools in the conference have as many as two matches left. The Warriors, however, have a guaranteed position, thanks to their record and the conference's tiebreakers.

Sophomore Lauren Fink (York, Pa./West York) added 12 kills, 11 digs, three aces and two blocks and junior Bethany Richardson (York, Pa./West York) notched 10 kills and three blocks. Sophomore Tayler Whitman (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) added seven kills, 10 digs and three blocks.

Lycoming broke open a first set tied at 12 when Fink served up 11 straight points to help the Warriors take a commanding lead en route to the 25-17 win. She posted two of her three aces in the match during that run.

In the second set, the Warriors ran out to a 10-3 win, with Slawson serving up six straight points. The Lions closed within three, but Burger served up five more straight points late in the set to help Lycoming take another 25-17 win. In the third set, the Warriors fell behind 20-16 before coming within a point at 21-20. However, the Lions were able to close out the 25-23 win.

In the final set, the Warriors jumped out to an 11-5 win and never let the Lions back within four points, cruising to a 25-14 win.

Albright was led by six kills from Marisa Bartone, 18 digs from Caitlin Klotzbach, five kills and three blocks from Kellie Hill and 22 assists and 10 digs from Claudia Guise.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 25, when they head to Centennial Conference-leading Swarthmore for a 1 p.m. match.
