Warriors fall short of upset bid against Dutchmen

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Three first-half goals helped the Lycoming College women's soccer team enter the second half with a one-goal lead, but regionally-ranked Lebanon Valley used two second-half scores to escape the Shangraw Athletic Complex with a 4-3 Commonwealth Conference win on a beautiful Thursday, Oct. 16.

Down 2-0 early in the first half, the Warriors (3-12 overall, 0-4 Commonwealth) responded with a flurry of scores to take a 3-2 lead into the break. Junior Kaitlyn Gulotta (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) got the rally started as she found freshman Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) with a beautiful pass through the Dutchmen defense and Lazarich put the breakaway shot into the right corner.

Sophomore Olivia Mendler (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) tied the game in the 32nd minute, as she took a throw-in from junior Riley Zimmerman (Port Royal, Pa./Juniata) and went down the right sideline before lifting a shot into the left corner. Two minutes later, the Warriors got a free kick and sophomore Amanda Wisolmerski (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) delivered a beauty into the box, where Lazarich delivered a header into the right corner.

The Flying Dutchmen (10-2-1 overall, 2-1 Commonwealth), ranked sixth in the latest Mid-Atlantic Region poll, drew the equalizer in the 47th minute, with Johnna Garbrick scoring on a header off a corner and Amanda Douglass scored the game-winner in the 70th minute, delivering a shot into the left corner from 25 yards out on the right side.

Sammy Bost started the game with two goals in the first 12 minutes to give the Dutchmen the early lead.

Lebanon Valley fired 23 shots in the game, forcing freshman Joelle Winey (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) to make nine saves. Lycoming took nine shots, but only three on net, which all went in.

Lazarich led the Warriors with two goals to give her 13 on the season, helping her move within two of the school's single-season record of 15 set by Danielle Curry in 2004.

Bost led the Dutchmen with two goals and Amanda Douglass added a goal and two assists.

The Warriors get back on the field when they face regionally-ranked Arcadia, which is No. 7 in the latest Mid-Atlantic Region poll, on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
