WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After a tense and tight first half, the Lycoming College men's soccer team was able to take much of the drama out of the game midway through the second half, leaving the only thing left unsettled being whether senior
Connor Keenan (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) would set the school's career shutout record.
He did and the team tied the school record for shutouts in a season with their 10
th blanking of the season, a 4-0 triumph over Lebanon Valley in an important Commonwealth Conference game on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 14.
The Warriors (10-2-3 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth) stepped back into the heart of the conference race with four games remaining, finishing the day with six points and in fourth place in the league, just one point behind Hood and Widener in second.
Lycoming did it by relying on its solid defense, which didn't allow many quality chances from Lebanon Valley (5-6-1 overall, 1-2 Commonwealth) during the game, as the Flying Dutchmen took just eight shots to the Warriors' 20.
Keenan was well up to the task in net, as he stopped all four of the Dutchmen's shots on goal as he broke the record for career shutouts with his 18
th, surpassing the mark of 17 held by David Kidd (1991-94) and Jason Fesler (2001-04).
Lycoming's offense heated up with its highest scoring half of the year 15 minutes into the second period, when senior
Luke Klingler (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) took a free kick and got it into a scramble, where freshman
Jordan Logan (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) delivered a scoring strike into the left corner.
Just five minutes later, freshman
Nathan Harding (Secretary, Md./North Dorcester) took advantage of a Dutchmen miscue in the backfield, taking the turnover and firing a shot into the right corner, giving Lycoming a 2-0 lead.
The Warriors salted the game away in the final 10 minutes, as freshman
Keenthy Yeboah (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) picked up a deflected pass from freshman
Abdullahi Abdi (Seattle, Wash./James Garfield) and broke around the keeper and found the back of the net in the 83
rd minute. Five minutes later, junior
Nick Neverman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) was pulled down in the box and he drilled the penalty kick for his first career goal.
Cam Avery stopped eight shots in net for the Dutchmen.
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they host Arcadia in another must-win Commonwealth Conference game at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 1 p.m.
