Lazarich brings the Lumber with three against Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) picked up the second hat trick of her young career, scoring three times to lead the Lycoming College women's soccer team to a 4-2 win at Penn College in the Battle for the Lumber on Wednesday night, Oct. 1.

Lazarich, who is one of just two players in school history to post two three-goal games in a season, also moved into the top 10 in a pair of the school's single-season record lists, as her 10 goals are now tied for sixth in school history and her 21 points are tied for 10th. Along the way, she helped the Warriors (3-7 overall) past the Wildcats (4-8 overall) for the first time since a 3-0 win in 2011.

After opening moments where both teams aggressively attacked, the Warriors began to take over in the middle of the first half, with the team drawing a corner kick in the 23rd minute. Off the kick, junior Bree Nishibun (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) headed a shot that was deflected to the feet of Lazarich, who delivered a laser into the upper right corner.

Penn College responded in the 28th minute, when Valeria Passalacqua connected with a tying strike, firing into the top right corner, but the tie lasted just two minutes before sophomore Shayna Iacoviello (Old Bridge, N.J./St. John Vianney) delivered a shot from outside the 18 into the left corner.

Lazarich wrapped up the scoring in the first half in the 40th minute, when sophomore Leanne Shaw (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) beat a defender on a beautiful pass to Lazerich, leaving her open to tap it past the keeper.

The freshman wrapped up her scoring in the 80th minute when she tried to tap a shot past the keeper, but the keeper stopped the initial shot, but Lazarich ran through the play, got the rebound and fired into the open net. Passalacqua rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute.

Freshman Joelle Winey (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) notched six saves to earn the win for the Warriors while Colleen Bowes stopped 15 shots for the Wildcats. The Warriors fired 25 shots in the game and Penn College took 19.

The Warriors get back on the field with the Commonwealth Conference opener on Saturday, Oct. 4, as they host Alvernia at 11 a.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
