Kristin Whitehead (Avon, Ohio/Avon) notched 11 digs to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team in its Commonwealth Conference opener at Messiah on Wednesday night, Sept. 4, but Messiah was able to post a 3-0 (28-26, 25-13, 25-15) win.
Freshman
Maggie Slawson (Armagh, Pa./United) notched five kills and hit .500 for the Warriors (2-2 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth) and senior
Katelyn McKillop (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) added 20 assists and two kills. Senior
Cortney Tice (Canton, Pa./Canton) added 10 digs.
Lycoming took a 19-13 lead in the first set, as it used a 9-3 run to build the lead. However, Messiah fought back with seven straight points and eventually took a 24-22 lead. However, Lycoming tied the match and fought off five set points before Messiah finally was able to take the 28-26 win. In the last two sets, Messiah combined to hit .295 to take 25-13 and 25-15 wins.
Jane Underman notched 17 kills and Kristen Douglas added 11 kills, 13 digs and four aces to lead the Falcons. Allison Hill notched 16 digs and Jessica Geib added five kills, seven digs and three blocks.
The Warriors get back on the court on Friday, Sept. 6, when they face Dickinson at 4 p.m. in the opening match of the Hampton Inn Crusader Classic. They will also face Allegheny at 6 p.m.
